"Grand Canyon Deluxe with Helicopter Tour" - It's an absolute blast. The pick up at the hotel was right on time....in fact just about all of the transfers were right on time. The only wait that day was getting from the Boulder City airport back to the hotel at the end of the day, but it was still pretty close to the 5:30 - 6:00 p.m. return time that was promised.
We were about to book one of the west rim helicopter tours when we heard that the west rim was like the "Grand Canyon on a diet". Neither of us had ever seen the GC so we wanted to see the best of it from the start. We were very happy we booked the longer tour that took us to the north and south rims. The cost of the longer tour was less than $40 more than the shorter west rim tour and it was worth every penny. We booked the tour over the phone a few days before. Terri, our reservation specialist had just taken the same tour the week before and loved it. She told us step by step what to expect and she was right about everything. The plane ride to the GC National Park takes you over all of the sites you would see if you booked one of the GC west rim tours (Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, etc.).
There isn't a moment of the tour we would change...except maybe the music on the helicopter ("Lady in Red"? Is that really appropriate Grand Canyon music?). The bus guide was excellent (Jean?). He took the time to walk around the look-out points with us and tell us facts you wouldn't normally read in a guide book. He also made sure everyone saw the nearly extinct California Condors. From what we were told there are less than 300 of these birds in existence and only about 150 of those are in the wild.
We would definitely recommend this tour to others. If you have never seen the GC don't settle for the tour of the west rim, it doesn't do the GC justice. If you are staying in Las Vegas and trying to squeeze in a nice dinner or a show that night don't book anything before 7:00 p.m. The ride from the Boulder City airport to the strip will take at least an hour with traffic and the numerous hotel stops.
Also, check the weather at the south/north rims of the GC before you leave the hotel. We expected May in the GC to be sandals and short-sleeve weather. The high temp at the south rim that day was 60 degrees. The low was 20. It was pleasant in the sun but when the wind whipped up the wind chill easily dropped to the 40's.
