Casinos, naturally, continue to draw tourists to Las Vegas. From penny slots to high stakes table games in private salons, from poker players betting only a dollar or two to those players who go "all-in" for a fortune, a gambler will find it all here. But there’s much more to Las Vegas than gambling. A weekend itinerary might highlight attractions of a different sort, from the choreographed fountains at the Bellagio to the Liberace Museum. Unfortunately, they've closed the Elvis-O-Rama Museum.
While Las Vegas had previously tried to become more family friendly, it would appear that times are changing yet again. There may be arcades at the MGM, pirates clashing in front of the TI (which was previously called Treasure Island), but Las Vegas is trying to take its image up a few notches. Ranging from top quality restaurants with well known names as Emeril Lagasse and Wolfgang Puck leading the way to designer stores like Tiffany’s, Gucci, and Chanel, Las Vegas boasts a new look. But not to worry, Las Vegas offers possibilities for all travellers. Don’t want a Gucci watch? Then go to the Belz Factory Outlet and buy a cheaper Fossil. Don’t want to spend $100 per person for a dinner at one of the hotels, then go to the Cheesecake Factory in the wonderful Caesar’s Palace Forum.
Hotels widely range in price and quality and buffets can still be had for $1.99. Breakfast and shows are abundant (and some risque). Since Las Vegas draws a huge convention crowd, the best time to go is when there are no conventions, or at least smaller conventions in town. This assures you of getting the best rates for hotels, choice of show tickets and last minute dinner reservations.
Las Vegas is a large beautiful city with its own neighbourhoods, like any others. The main hotels and restaurants often read about in tour guides are on the main Strip. Rent a car, wander outside the Strip and find the Hoover Dam, try a neighbourhood restaurant, or even better, relax at one of the beautiful pools that many of the hotels are known for.
