Sofia has a large airport, located about five miles east of the train station in the downtown area. Many major airlines fly into the airport, including Air France, British Airways, and the Bulgarian national airline, Bulgaria Air. Recently, low-cost airlines have set up shop in the airport. Wizz Air flies to Budapest, Hungary and to London. SkyEurope flies to Brataslava.

There is regular bus service to and from the airport. The line, number 84 Sofia Airport - Sofia University, operates year-round from 5am to 11pm and a ticket costs .5kl, or .25 euro. Buy your ticket from the kiosk at the bus stop. If you have unusually large luggage, you have to buy a ticket for your luggage, but for such an inexpensive ticket, it isn't that much of a hassle.

Note: The airport has been undergoing expansion for a number of years, and there is no end to the construction in site. There may be significant delays getting in and getting out of the airport. It is best to call ahead to find out the status of your flight.
