The market in front of the Rathaus is the largest and most famous, but is also the most commercial Christkindlmarkt in Vienna. Most of the things on sale are mass produced but a few are charming - wooden tree ornaments and the like. That being said, it is still a fun-filled destination with lots of good things to eat and the wonderful, warming, hot spiced wine to drink as you walk around in the cold in the shadows of the huge, ornate city hall whose windows act as a giant Advent calendar. There are many attractions for children on the market and in the surrounding gardens.

There are also popular Christmas markets in front of the palace of Schönbrunn and the Belvedere Palace and in front of the Karlskirche.. A smaller market, which is very popular with locals rather than tourists, is to be found at the Freyung in front of the Schottenkirche. Just round the corner is another market on the square Am Hof. The market in the Spittelberg area is different being spread over a few of the district's very atmospheric pedestrianised streets.
