The Lake District National Park Authority alone runs nearly 600 events every year, so there is always something to do around the area. During National Parks Week, which is usually in late July, the park is especially festive, but various guided walks of various lengths and difficulties can be found throughout the year. These usually focus on different places of natural, cultural or archaeological interest. These walks are free, though park rangers will always appreciate donations that go toward park preservation. There are also boat cruises, programs for children and tours that cater toward the handicapped or those with dogs.

Besides the events held by the Park Authority, Lake District towns usually have their own special events as well. Many have agriculture shows in the summer, At Cockermouth, the birthplace of William Wordsworth, farmers gather to show off their cattle, horses, produce and handmade crafts. Gilsland has an equestrian show with pony-riding classes, and Lowther has a horse and carriage driving fair as well. There are also more cultural events, such as the three-week Lake District Summer Music festival based in Kendal, with events throughout Cumbria. This is the largest music festival in the United Kingdom and takes place every August. Around the same time, there is also a Buddhist Himalaya Festival in Penrith which offers Tibetan and Nepalese art and craftwork.
