The Lake District National Park Authority holds guided walks of all difficulty and duration levels for free (though donations are welcome). Young children can usually still handle most of the guided walks designated ‘Easy’, but rangers suggest saving more strenuous tours for children 11 years of age or older. If none of the walks sound appealing, there are also bus and ferry tours offered by various organizations that highlight regional attractions. Various “Safari” programs in Grizedale Forest Park, for example, take guests on minibus tours of Cumbria’s sculptural or floral attractions. The Cumbria Wildlife Trust also has special children-friendly programs for exploring lake shores, moss nature reserves and rivers in the region.

There is a playground at the Lake District Visitor Centre at Brockhole, which also has picnic grounds and a gift shop. Children may also want to see one of the gardens around the Lake District, which not only have many species of plants but is also home to birds and other types of wildlife.

The numerous crafts and county fairs during the summer are sure to have plenty of things to entertain the entire family, and even horse shows often have pony rides available.

Around Halloween, the moors around Cumbria come alive with Halloween festivities. Grizedale Forest Park, in particular, has indoor activities for children of all ages. There is an admission fee and guests are urged to reserve places early.
