This was our first trip to Las Vegas and not sure what to expect. We chose to stay in a NON-CASINO hotel because neither of us smoke. We stayed at the Carriage House, which we thoroughly enjoyed.... close by, clean and friendly staff. We heard about the construction noise around the hotel, but honestly we didn't notice anything. We had a King room on the back side of the hotel. The pool and hot tub were adequate, nothing elaborate. Tip #1 - Go to a bookstore and take a small map with you to familiarize yourself with the area first... especially if you are renting a car and driving. We did... especially useful if you want to go to Hoover Dam, Red Rock, etc.
There is LOTS to do in Vegas... The only tickets we went with "in hand" were for Celine @ Ceasar's. A friend recommended that we visit one of the 1/2 price ticket booths (there are 4) around town once we got there and then we bought the remaining tickets. TIP #2 -- THIS IS SOMETHING ALL VISITORS SHOULD DO!!! They open @ 10:30 and start selling tickets @ 11:00. Tickets vary each day, so check daily if there is something you want to see that isn't listed. You will NOT get tickets for Celine, Manilow and other TOP star performers, so plan accordingly.
We saw La Cage (B), Phantom (A+++ awesome), went to Freemont Street, the OLD Las Vegas (B - nightly show), Madama Tussaud's wax museum (C), also the Fountains @ Bellagio (B), the Volcano eruption @ Mirage (C) , Hoover Dam (A-) and the Celine Dion "show" (B+)... would liked to have had more time to see a few more shows and go outside the city to see Red Rock Canyon and other areas. Just not enough time!
There is lots of walking, but good exercise... public transportation is a "C" -- The STRIP is almost always a parking lot on weekends. We did drive to see a few shows and parking in the hotel garages wasn't a problem...if you go in on the back side, parking is much easier than trying to access it from the Strip. We didn't encountered any lines for food or anything else... The Casinos are HUGE and sometimes it's hard to find your way around -- they do it deliberately to keep you in there!!!! lol TIP # 3 - leave enough time to find the theatre when seeing a show -- sometimes it isnt' as easy as it might seem!
There is some of the best shopping I've seen outside of NY and Beverly Hills... Malls within walking distance of one another with every imaginable store you'd ever want... in the Fashion Show Mall -- there is a fashion show every few hours.... the floor rises to reveal a stage and the runway actually comes out of the floor.... ONLY in Las Vegas!!
Food is good (and mostly cheap) -- drinks are expensive... soda...Starbucks..... Coffee too... water....beer.... etc. All more expensive than what we were used to. TIP #4 -- Find a grocery store and store some in your hotel -- especially if you have a fridge. That's where they make their money.... on the drinks! The Alladin Mall has a few good places to eat there that are good. The Indian restaurant Tamba was very good.
We (my partner and I) went to a few gay bars on Paradise Rd., just south of Harmon and had a nice time. There are four within walking distance of each other. From what we could tell, Vegas has a nice gay community... but not centralized. Very spread out... not like the Castro in S.F., DuPont in DC, Village in NY, etc.
Last TIP - Leave plenty of time to get throught the security line (depending on when you are leaving) -- the day we left, it took us exactly ONE HOUR once we got to the airport to get to the security area to be screened.
I've posted a few pics from our trip if you want to take a look--
