I have to state upfront that for dollars spent, and location, this has to be THE #1 spot in Las Vegas, if you are staying Downtown. My stay at the Plaza was for two days in late June. 2008.
My experience at the Plaza was excellent. I had a room on the 8th floor (handicapped room) that was large, with two queen beds, a table and two nice chairs by the window, a long chest with TV on top. (See photos) The bathroom offered an easy enter shower, a sink with vanity, and stool, with plenty of room to get around. The room amenities were more than adequate, with shampoo, body lotion, and soaps, both facial and body. Towels and washcloths were actually fairly thick, and plush, and there were enough every day (3 to 4 of each) to be more than adequate for my needs. Water pressure was excellent here, and the condition of the walls, ceiling, and other amenities were all in very good condition.
Nothing fancy here.. the carpet could stand to be replaced, but from what I could tell, the Plaza is undergoing renovation now. While I was there, they were replacing carpet in the elevator bays, and.. compliments to them, they did not shut the elevators down while doing so. You just "stepped over" and proceeded on your way. I will also say that the Plaza had the fastest elevators... both going, and waiting for, that I've ever seen in Las Vegas. My longest wait would have been 20-30 seconds! No kidding!
I ate at their buffet several times, and found that for $7.77 the value could not be beat. I had to wait in a line one time, and that was about a 10 minute wait. They had a live carving station, and.. a section on Chinese Food, and also Dessert Bar that I never got to, because I was satisfied with the main food station!
Finding a dinner buffet in Las Vegas for $7.77 per person without coupons (and there are sometimes 2-for-1's available) this value is without question. There would not be the quantity of food you would find on a $20-$30 buffet, BUT.. the food was quite tasty, and better than anything I can get at a local buffet in my area. If you are not expecting the quality and quantity of a 5 star hotel, and fancy fancy table linens and such, the Plaza will suit you for at least some of your meals. The early brunch has both breakfast and lunch offerings, and the buffet is open, I believe from 10 am to 10 pm.
I enjoyed gambling at this Casino. They have plenty of slot machines, and I had some luck here, as well as at Bingo. Because I was here with a large group that was spread all over Las Vegas, I didn't get to spend as much time as I would have liked here, but there will be other visits. Never even had a chance to sit at a blackjack table, more's the pity.
I found the casino help, check in desk, bell staff, and housekeeping were competent and friendly, all well above what I would have expected. Look for bigger and better things here, but if it never improves, and stays just as it is, I can guarantee that I'll be back. I will also add that the Plaza hosts the only downtown Bingo available, and.. I thoroughly enjoyed attending multiple sessions, and had some good luck~!! There is a free beverage station for coffee, juices, and soda and tea open at all sessions, so you don't have to grab coffee before you get there!!!
Expect to see me again, Plaza. And I look forward to seeing the improvements I've heard are coming!!!!
