I wasn't expecting much, knowing that for a hotel on the strip at this price, it wasn't going to be the greatest. But traveling in a group of 7, we needed somewhere cheap and location was key. Excalibur came through on both accounts. I thought the hotel was really well priced, considering some of it's neighbors. The location was the most attractive part of the hotel. It is close (within walking distance) to NY, NY and MGM Grand. Mandalay Bay and Luxor are just a short (free) tram ride away. For trips further up the Strip, either walk...it's not that bad...or buy the $5 bus pass that lasts 24 hours. Bellagio is not a far walk...but some others like TI, Venetian and Paris, might be a bit far in the August heat. The hotel is definitely in need of some updating. We stayed in Tower 1...apparently the un-remodeled tower. The carpet was brown shag, but the beds were extrememly comfortable, it was clean, and the bathroom was large. We had a lovely view of a concrete wall...but honestly, your in Vegas, why are you in your room!? The pools did leave a bad impression. The max depth is 3 1/2 feet in the two open pools and it was filled with kids. Apparently the 3rd pool is under construction. They did provide towels, and there are people walking around talking drink orders. I highly recommend visiting the restaurants in the hotel. Dick's Last Resort is a fun place if you don't mind your waitress throwing napkins at you, yelling your order across the room or wearing hat's with funny comments. Also, the Sherwood Forest Cafe has great food, but the service is slow, so don't go when your in a rush. The brunch at the upstairs buffet was also great. For the ladies, I highly recommend seeing the Thunder from Down Under. They are located right in the hotel....and it's a really fun show! Don't bring the boys though!
The casino was also great. We stuck mostly to the blackjack tables...and except for 1 dealer, all were friendly and helpful to us. If you're more into the slots, check out the I Dream of Jeannie located near the entrance. A few of us hit that a few times!
All in all, Excalibur is a great place to stay if you don't want to be smack dab in the middle of the strip, and you don't mind staying in a older, less updated location to save your money for gambling and shows! (Cirque de Soleil is Awesome!)
