We were a group of eight all together with four arriving on a Monday and the remaining four on Wednesday. This was my 16th trip to Vegas so I feel I have some experience and knowledge of vegas.Have stayed in many hotels but never the Trop. We had friends stay there the year before and they were very happy. My friend had become aquainted with one the big shots and was told to consider coming back next time and we could get comped. Yes the hotel is small and old by comparison, but still has a beautiful casino with a magnificent stained glass awning. The rooms were good sized and came with a small refrig and in-room safe (both very appealing to our type of travel). We had a couch in our room as well as a table and chairs. The beds were comfortable and the bathroom was very good sized. Having stayed in much larger hotels, I had forgotten how nice it can be to be right down the hall from the elevator and only a few flights down to the casino. The elevators opened directly on the casino floor. The restaurants were good and we had a wonderful time in the pool. We rented a cabana for a very cheap price (50bucks for the day). There was a TV and refrigerator (which they stocked with juice, water and fruit) A fan over a table w/ four large captain chairs (great pads) and even a small dressing area. We had excellent service and the waitress was well tipped of course.
At night when we would return from the strip after seeing a show it was nice to come back to a small comfortable casino that only took minutes to walk through. We had VIP check in which gave us access to a small room with liquor, wine or soft drinks any time the room was open. AT the end of our week, we found that our rooms had been comped so it was really a great trip overall. If you like a more intimate surrounding and don't care if everything is brand new, this is the place to stay. The only complaint I would offer is their parking facilities (or lack of). We always rent a car and two of the seven nights we stayed, the valet was full and they wanted us to park across the street. We refused and told them we were guests and not going anywhere. They could have the car and the keys and find a place for it later. I should mention, the reason the lot was so full was because of visitor traffic , shows , gamblers, etc.

I shopped around online for something decent but affordable on the strip. Found the Trop to be the place. Booked a room for 3 nites. When we got to the hotel at 11am, they did not have a Island Tower room for us until 3pm, but we could upgrade $20 a nite and get a Paradise Tower room. Which looking at the walk, was well worth it. The Paradise Tower is right off the casino floor, the Island Tower is quite a walk from the casino. Got into our room, bell service brought our luggage right up. But our room, which was smoking, smelt! Note, always bring an air freshener, which I did. Our safe did not work either, but after 2 visits shortly after arriving, security did fix it. Fridge in our room was great. The casino was great, we had fun gambling there. Mizuno's was awesome. The Follies show, which we got free tickets for, was ok, nothing fab. Received lots of coupons for deals and free things, which was nice. The room was large, as was the bathroom. My sister had a room that was a bit cleaner and didn't smell, but you just don't know what you're going to get. I would stay there again, good location, food, and gambling, but nothing spectacular!

Just returned from a stay at the Trop. We found the hotel staff extremely pleasant and helpful. Our room in the Island Tower was certainly comfortable, clean and functional. (Not a great view, but we were not there for the view.) One negative: The Island Buffet was nasty, needs lots of improvement in food quality and wait staff service and attitude.. We went to breakfast buffet at the San Remo Hotel where the staff and food were excellent. Also the Trop does not offer in room coffee maker and if we stayed there again, we would definitely take one. The reason we rated the hotel slightly above average is the hotel staff seemed to truly care about our comfort and was immediately responsive to our complaints/concerns.

Well, It is a room, and if that is all you need, it's okay. I think I got the absolute worst room in the place. Definetly NOT impressed. First the good. The room didn't smell smokey, the sheets appeared to be clean (though no fitted sheets), and the bathroom was in decent shape and well lit. The best part of this hotel is the location, it is on the corner of Tropicana(go figure) and Las Vegas Blvd. MGM Grand and NY NY are right across the street. Spend your time there!

Now the cons. Out my window I could see nothing but A/C units and the back of a wall. Nothing else. Oh well, I wasn't there for the view, but if I was, I would have been rather upset. The bigger issue was the A/C. It didn't work and just made lots of noise. The only saving grace was the fact that I went in February and just left the window open. This brings up another issue, the window. I will be curious to see what they do about the window in July, because there was no way to close it. Worked for my situation, but in the summer it will be a problem. Other than that, I didn't gamble there really, and just went to other bars for entertainment.

I am coming out to Vegas again in April, and will be looking for other alterantives as far as a hotel. If I can't find anything in the price range, I would actually consider doing it again.

My parents and I decided to stay at the Trop for my b-day Feb. 07, 05 to Feb. 09, 05. After being in Las Vegas dozens of times this was my first stay at the TROP.

I booked two rooms through a dot com site and got a great deal. At check-in time we were upgraded to the Island Tower (from the Garden) w/ no charge. The Trop receptionist had a little trouble finding one of our reservations. As it turned out there was a spelling error but everything was corrected. I should add that we waited in line for about 30 minutes to check-in. 80% of the check-in windows were open. We arrived at the hotel around 1:30 pm; Monday, Feb. 7. My parents room was on the 6th floor and my room was on the 15th. floor.

The room was clean, comfortable, and very spacious. There was a bed sofa in a sitting area and the room had a safe ($3 a day to use). There were mirrors on the ceiling above the bed, a mirror above the head board, and a mirror on the wall next to the bed (what ever happens in Vegas stays in Vegas... as the commercials say... wink, wink). The bathroom was spacious and was stocked with the normal toiletries and essentials. From my room I had a view of the side of the San Remo, MGM (Tropicana Ave. side), and a view of McCarran Airport. To my surprise and luck I had an excellent view of the "hidden in plain view" E.G. & G. Terminal and it's lowkey and unmarked JANET airplanes used to transport employees to the secret AREA 51 military base. If you want to see the terminal just go to the Island Tower (no security checks) and take the elevator to at least the 15th floor. When you walk out of the elevator walk staight away to the viewing window. There you'll have a perfect unobstructed view of the terminal and the JANET planes (white with red stripe across the body with no IDs).

As far as the casino goes you get a sense that it is aging. Sort of 1970s-ish. You'll think you're at the state line. You'll definitely see this once you begin casino hopping and compare. The casino is a bit small and very smokey. The slots are very stingy. A lady did win $63,000 at the tables during our second night. The restaurants close early and I did not find a place to eat for late nighters like myself. Even some bars close early... boooo. The shops that are located in the hall that leads from the casino to the Island Tower are more like kiosks... your average souvenir fare. Great prices. We did not explore the exterior of the TROP. It does look.... TROPical! From my room you can barely hear noise from the hall. I did see plenty of dishes/trays left outside of rooms from room service. A little tacky but no big deal. Since the TROP is at the southern part of the strip there is some walking to do to get to the other properties such as Caesers, Treasure Island, Monte Carlo, etc. I enjoyed the walking. Lots to see. If you're a gambler go to Fremont St. The odds are much better than the properties on the Strip. For the guys, the most attractive females are at the New York-New York... workers and visitors!

Overall I would recommend the TROP. It is not fancy but adequate. It is one of the last original hotels. For a nice, safe, and clean place to basically sleep and shower this is the place. Great value. I will return to the TROP this April.
