I was in Vegas once again and while my stay at the Monte Carlo was not the worst it most certainly was not my best time either. I was warned about the construction noise by other TA members and made sure I asked for a room away from the noise. I was given a room on the 18th floor with a “mountain” view. There was a tiny bit of construction noise during the day, but nothing major.
My first problem with the room was with the strong odor of cigarette smoke – ick!! I’ll be honest, I’ve never been bothered before as I have many friends who smoke, but this was real bad. I toyed with requesting a room change, but it was already midnight and I was exhausted. I figured I’d make the best of it – big mistake. Luckily I discovered the next day I could crack the window open and that went a long way in airing out the room.
The room also had one of those adjoining room doors and the people next door weren’t very quiet. I realize Vegas is a lot of fun, but must you laugh and talk loudly every night at 2:00 AM?!?!?! Ugh. If possible, do yourself a favor and try and avoid the rooms with an adjoining door.
When I went to take a shower the next morning I discovered mold in the shower, water damage on the ceiling and the water in the tub drained very, very s-l-o-w-l-y. Standing in ankle deep, dirty shower water wasn’t very enjoyable.
Now you may be asking me why I continued to stay in the room and that’s a good question to ask and my response would be a touch of laziness and a touch of stubbornness, but quite frankly, why should I have had to ask for a new room? Those rooms are virtually inspected on a daily basis and at the very least the mold should have been dealt with almost immediately. A quick spray of bleach would have done the trick.
I’m sure the pool area at one time was very nice, but with all the construction going on, it’s a bit of a downer. I hadn’t expected the noise to be too much, but on Easter Sunday all the construction had stopped and what a difference – clearly the construction noise is a bit loud. In March the sun doesn’t start creeping across the pool area until around 10:45 AM, so depending on your spot, you may be in a shaded area for quite some time. The waitresses came around on a fairly regular basis on Friday, Saturday & Sunday, but they were pretty scarce on Monday. My guess is this will change as the summer crowds increase.
As I said, not a horrible time and based on the rate I received it was a relatively cheap trip, but the room fell way short of meeting my expectations. It’s unlikely I’ll be returning to the Monte Carlo anytime soon unless they manage to throw another fabulous deal my way and I can be guaranteed a better room.
