I was surprised at that the lack of service around the edges that the Venetian provided on a recent stay. I know it is a very large hotel and has to deal with a large number of guests and problems can happen from time to time. However, this place was supposed to be better and different than the other hotels and provide better service! But, it felt nothing more than the "average" casinos I've stayed at in the past: Luxor, NY NY, MGM, etc. So, since it wasn't giving me the feeling of being better than those places, why are we paying more for the Venetian when we could have better class service on The Strip for less dough?
We arrived and the Valet is full and had to self park. Fine. It happens, however the self-park lot was not attended by any employees, and the signs were embarassingly missing. O.K., how do we find the check-in from the parking lot -- the elevators had no clear indication where to go -- we found we had to walk through a smelly, unsafe, service dock area where the limos park and through an unmarked door which dumps right next to the lobby -- really -- this is the Venetian?
We checked in 15 minutes early at 2:45 pm (ok, our fault) before the "3 pm Check in time" to learn that check in is really "Between 3 and 5 pm". I travel extensively -- I've never heard that one. Anyway, we were told to give them our cell phone number and we would be called anytime between 3 and 5 when our room is ready. The front desk staff were not very friendly nor appologetic -- nor helpful -- she had no idea when we would get our room. We shopped and walked the "canal" and waited over an hour and a half before going back to the Check-in to inquire about our room and essentially we had to beg for it. Despite not finding a room for us at first, they finally found a room for us while we politely made our case. Jessica at the front desk there was the nicest person we dealt with at the Venetian -- everything and everyone else felt as fake as the frescos on the celiings.
Here's the kicker: people all over are getting their rooms and some are not. There are no benches in the lobby area at all -- people are sitting on the floors, blocking walk-ways, and looking annoyed, too. This is world class, The Venetian? Oh, sorry, I forgot they want us to go sit in front of the slots or at one of the tables, it is still Vegas I guess.
Another small issue was it took 30 minutes (and a phone call: what color is your luggage ticket and what do they look like?) for the bell desk to find our misplaced luggage and bring it up to us. Mistakes can happen, no worries, we got our luggage, but still, this is the Venetian?
The room had a missing Strip view (OK, we could see the Mirage sign), but was nice and spacious. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom huge. There were plenty of TV's (3!) and other ammenities: decent toiletry supplies, hair dryer, make-up mirror, bathrobes, in room fax (?), etc. There were even more cable channels than I've seen in a Vegas casino hotel.
My boyfriend was very pleased (NOT) to step in a very soaked wet spot on the carpet next to the bed. Luckily, it smelled like cleaning fluids, but still, couldn't they have used a wet vac to soak it up? I also noticed glass rings and stains on the coffee table and another table -- it clearly had not been wiped down from the previous guests. All these things were discovered in the first 3 hours of us being there and we kept thinking, this is the Venetian? World class?
The hallway leading to our room smelled like a sewer and the pipes in the middle of the night would make very loud gurgling and bubbling noises into our sinks and bath tub.
So, despite the room being somewhat nice, but not to level of cleanliness for such a class (and cost) hotel, and because we paid for a "luxury view suite" and didn't get the luxury service (or the "view"), we won't come back.
