Having checked-out from the Monte Carlo Hotel in disgust we saw a special deal advertised on the net for the TI and strolled up the Strip to investigate. The Receptionist said they didn't know anything about Expedia's deal and her quoted room rates seemed a bit high but she suggested we cross the lobby and ring Reservations on the House phone. We did and they offered a "Thirty Six Hour Deal" (?) so we booked from Sunday night for five nights at $64 per night inc tax. (Friday and Sat are aways more (sometimes much more expesive). How glad we changed! Our room was on the 32nd floor (we even had our own elevator key!) and the room was gorgeous with huge soft beds and four of the plumpest pillows you'll ever see on each bed. There was flat screen plasma tv and spacious bathroom. For a moment we thought we had been given a more expensive upgraded room but we checked on the Hotel tv billing service and it read $46. Fantastic. Being at the north end of the Strip the TI is superbly positioned opposite the Venetian, a walk away from the Palazzo and The Wynn and Encore Hotels. and connected to the Mirage by a handy free mini tram. You can also walk to Caesars Palace, The Bellagio, Harrahs, Bally's, Paris etc. We enjoyed the Coffee Shop in the morning and tried the Buffet which was fine (they even make fresh candy floss (cotton candy). It is really is 'all you can eat'. Food is always a contentious subject in hotels but we particularly enjoyed the Mirage's New York Deli where we had hot dog and french fries to feed an army. Try one of their delicious cake slices - our friendly waiter refused to serve us one cheesecake each - instead arriving wth one cheesecake and two forks - and we still didn't finish it! Look out for towering pastrami on rye 'sandwiches'. Nightime we went to the Improve Comedy show at Harrah's which was very, very funny (different comics each week) and we also saw 'Legends in Concert ' which is a truly enjoyable evening of 'tribute acts' with differing line-ups. (We had Britney, David Bowie, Temptations, James Brown and - of course Elvis. Last year we saw The Beatles 'Love' Show at the Mirage and it really is worth seeing. We're not great ones for Cirque du Soleil (when you've seen one Mongolian contortionist with his head up his xxxx. you've seen them all)
but our room phone advised us of a guest Special 2 for 1 deal fo Mystere which we actually declined. We've flown over the Grand Canyon a couple of times and my advice to Brits is don't book your trip in the UK - wait till you get to Vegas -there are plenty of deals on offer at cheaper prices than travel agents offer and that goes for other Shows too.
Back at the TI were approached the pool with some trepidation after our sour experience at the Monte Carlo but we need not have worried. We were waived through and soon found a couple of loungers near the large hot tub and pool. There are a bevvy of pretty waitresses at your service when you raise the flag on your lounger or you can visit the well stocked bar and try (among many other options) a margarita/pina colada or cold Budweiser. They even have a poolside cafe serviced by the Polynesian-themed Kahunaville restaurant where we stuffed ourselves on Jumbo Shrimp kebabs with rice,($12.99), the biggest fruit platter I've ever seen ($9.95) (as usual it would have fed half a dozen hungry mouths) and a botle of Californian Champagne described as brut /dry but in fact more like a sweeter Asti Spumante) ($18). I'm holding the bill now for $42.72 (about £14 each at $1.57 - £1). We didn't eat again that day! For British guests you will always be asked for 'Picture ID' with charges againt the room/Credit Card at the TI. (Driving Licence or take your Bus Pass).
Here's a great tip to save $$$. Not being big gamblers my wife and I like to play the 2c Slots (adding extra 'lines' to play about 30 cents per pull.) The TI waitresses will serve you drinks as long as you are playing, especially during the quieter midweek. Make sure you get her attention early on and give her a tip (about $2) when she brings your first tray of drinks (you can have anything you like.) Wifey gets high on Champage Mimosas (Champs + Fresh Orange Juice) and during one two-hour slots session we won $250 and slurped back six Mimosas each! We staggered away happy and our attentive waitress remembered us the next day - (it's called a symbiotic relationship). In the evenings the Kahunaville cafe and bar has live music and juggling bartenders and there is a night club if you feel sophisicated. Out front the Sirens of TI battle it out in what used to be Buccaneer Bay with real galleons and canon -it's noisy, colourful and great fun. If you like noisy music (No it aint all gangsta rap man) then stroll over to the 'Carnaval' between Harrahs and Imperial Palace (and look out for the sexy Poll Dancers just inside Harrah's) -there's live bands playing, juggling waiters and cold beer! We loved the TI.
