My fiancee and I wanted a quick getaway from our busy schedules. What better way than to go to Sin City! I have been to Vegas many times and have lodged at a different hotel each time; The Mirage, Ballys, Luxor, Stratosphere, and most recently the New York New York.
After reading several reviews, I must admit, I was somewhat skeptical about booking at the New York. If people are going to pay $180+ a night for a room, the least I would expect is above average ratings across the board. As far as other reviews, we had a good experience.
First off, as more than few have noted, the check in desk is average at best. After many visits, every hotel, EXCEPT the New York New York has OFFERED room upgrades along with complimentary ticket booklets with freebies. Don't get me wrong, the check in desk was not rude, however, they were far from overtly courteous and accomadating as every other hotel Ive stayed at. No free tickets for the rollercoaster, nor the buffet, nor $10 match play blackjack coupons, ZIPPO! Not that we expected anything for free, but c'mon, at least a kind gesture of some sort would have been appreciated. The player reward card desk was just as dull.
As for the smell everyone noted, there is a scent. It wasnt overpowering, but defintely noticeable. If you are sensitive to odors, beware. It kinda smelled like a mix of grandmas potpourri and a hint of apple cider. Only in the hallways though, not in the room.
We booked the Spa Deluxe (Jacuzzi tub in room) and were on the 30th floor. Im not sure which tower it is in, BUT I can defintely see that if you are sensitive to noise, the roller coaster might pose a problem if you are on any floor below the 30th. We had a nice view of the rollercoaster, and you could hear a slight rumble as it operated, and in the morning I could hear it as it clicked up to its first dropping point. Didnt bother my fiancee and I, but if you are a light sleeper, be wary of lower level floors.
The room was very very spacious and everything was clean and orderly. We always lift up the blankets and inspect the sheets for any hairs or stains, no complaints. The jacuzzi tub was clean as well. Not recommended for more than 2! Im an athletic 5'10 220lb, she a comfy 5'3 125lb, and we took up the whole tub. So if you and your spouse/girlfriend are bigger, you are going to be squished like sardines. The jets are relaxing, nothing impressive, but still relaxing. All it took was some incense and a bottle of Grey Goose and it was smooth sailing. Bring your own bubble bath, AND DONT POUR TOO MUCH! Wait a while, when the jets turn on, it agitates the bubbles and amplifies them by 5. I got a little crazy as I wanted instant bubbles and we had a small overflow of bubbles, had to drain and restart the tub. No big mess, just fair warning.
This type of room is perfect for a couple, like ourselves, looking for a little R & R for a weekend. Didnt expect over the top 5 star quality, but was very pleased with the layout/comfy factor. We checked in at 3pm, and I promptly put the do not disturb sign on our door. 20 mins into unpacking, housekeeping came by, KNOCKED on the door! I answered. She was very nice and said she was just making sure. Hmm, wonder if I didnt answer the door and I were in the shower, fiancee changing into an outfit, the possibilites are endless? The bed was average, pillows horrible (every hotel pillow is, unless you are in the penthouse suites, I recommend bringin 1 of your own). The shower was in a separate area, good water pressure. The sink/grooming area was also seperate, the drain made a funny noise (a gulping sound) when draining, but only for 30 seconds or so, then it dissappeared. Again, no biggie for us, may be for others who want absolute perfection. Closet space was small, but we were only there for 2 days so it was fine. Everyone overpacks anyway, especially the ladies. With her overpacking we still had some room to spare in the grooming/closet area.
As far as the actual casino in the hotel, this is definetly not a place for laid back people as we are. It is a very crowded, loud, and a somewhat obnoxious scene. Very large layout, can be confusing at times. The ambience is impressive, one of the coolest hotels Ive been in. Not luxurious, not WOW (like the Ceasers), but very cool. Minimum $10 blackjack/roulette (thats everywhere now!)
Im a late night guy, and really only eat twice a day. Two buffets in one day would kill me, so we prefer ot eat a heavy breakfast buffet (You have to go to Cafe Lago in the Ceasers Hotel, its the bomb! $16 per person for fresh, clean, excellent food). Snack on a little something mid day, and have a quick fix at night. The America restaraunt in the New York is a perfect spot for anyone looking for some good, freshly prepared food, after a day of drinking and gambling late night. Stays open all night (Many buffets close at 10pm), food was good for the price (You wont feel like crap like you just ate 10 Taco Bell tacos). We went there both late nights, around 11pm-midnight, and was blown away at the quality for such a late night eatery, in Vegas. I got the philly steak sandwich ($10) with fries, SLAMMIN! For the price and quality you cant beat it. Dinner for two, with a beer and tip, $40. Trust me, its a steal.
We are reg. people who just like to have a good time, and New York New York Spa Deluxe Room gave us just that. We prefer gambling at the Imperial Palace, more of our type of crowd. Low key, orginal folks just hanging out without the intimadating luxuries/fancies of other hotels that might scare people off otherwise. Their happy hour there is the bomb! 2 for 1 drinks 4p-7p, and they werent small/ watered down! TWO Hennesey and cokes for $5, cant get any better than that (Do yourself a favor, buy your first two mixed drinks to get a good buzz going, then let the girls bring you rounds of Coronas/Heiniekens for a $1. Dont even bother with the cheap, watered down, mini mix drinks they bring you. You cant mess up a good import beer)
Would we go back again? Perhaps, but first we want to check out the MGM grand, we heard it gives the New York a run for its money.
Booked on vegas.com, hands down the best internet deals for vegas. Better than expedia/travelocity/priceline. Two roundtrip tixs from San Diego, 3 days/2nights at NYNY with jacuzzi in room, $580. Hopefully the tips/review will clear up any misconceptions that some may have.
