Just returned from a two night stay at the Las Vegas Hilton, July 5 - 7, 2004. Have stayed at this hotel once before several years ago and enjoyed that visit. This trip I decided that I was tired of paying high prices for bad service and filthy rooms at some of the newer, pretentious "luxury" hotels in Las Vegas (i.e. The Venetian). I decided to give my business back to the Las Vegas Hilton and am glad that I did.
This hotel is older, yes, and not as "wow" as some of the new places. However, it is very comfortable, clean, and the staff at the Las Vegas Hilton are genuinely friendly and helpful. I would classify the Las Vegas Hilton as a "Golden Oldie".
When we arrived the front desk agent was friendly and completely accomodating to our request for a high floor, king bed room. He gave us a fantastic view room on the 19th floor, facing the strip. I have paid triple the room rate for what I paid at the Hilton at other "luxury" hotels and have never had as nice a view as this room had.
The room itself was amply sized, even with the king bed, and included an upholstered chair with ottoman, an upholstered desk chair for use at the large granite top window desk (with plenty of electical plugs located conveniently under the desk), and an entertainment armoire. All hard surfaces on the furniture and counters were covered with a black and white colored granite, which I thought was a nice touch.
The large panoramic windows had an electrically controlled opening/closing system, which I got a kick out of (easily amused I guess).
Bathroom was very clean, had a granite counter as well, excellent lighting, and a very large oval bathtub/shower combo. Towels were of good quality and fluffy. Nice adjustable massaging shower head with good water pressure. The tub itself looked a bit worn, but all of the tile was clean and in good shape, and I did not see mold anywhere (the Las Vegas Hilton housekeepers could teach the Venetian hotel's housekeepers how to clean a bathroom, and how to remove mold from the showers.....).
There was a granite topped vanity with good lighting and small stool in the area outside the bathroom next to the closet. An iron, ironing board, two luggage racks, and extra folding chair were located in the closet.
The king size bed was extremely comfortable and firm, had good linens, and down pillows. I think I had the best nights sleep ever in a hotel room both nights. No sounds detectable other than the sound masking white noise humm from the ventilation system, which in my opinion makes for a great sleeping environment.
We ate dinner at the Hilton's Italian restaurant, "Andiamo", the first night. I experienced what I would say is one of the best dishes I've ever ate in a restaurant at "Andiamo" - it was called "Fettucini Portofino". This dish was absolutely perfect! Seafood pasta consisting of lobster meat, jumbo scallops, shrimp, and squid in a beautiful tomato/herb sauce over fettucini. If I'm in Las Vegas, no matter where I stay in the future, I will visit this restaurant for this dish alone! Fantastic! And the service was efficiently top notch, too. Highly recommend!
Second night we met local friends for dinner at the Hilton's "Steakhouse" restaurant . We've been here before and were not disappointed this second visit. Our waitress was a complete doll (I'm terrible with names, but she has a very long name and has been there awhile - ask for the waitress with the long name and they will know who you mean!). Food was perfect and outstanding, as was service, and this is another restaurant which will get our business again.
Pool area is large, and even though it was busy with a lot of children (I assume summer vacations), we had no problem locating a quiet area to relax. A full service bar is conveniently located at the pool, and there are quite a few private cabanas which looked like a nice way to spend a lazy afternoon (price was $45 for four hours rental, or $75 for full day, which I thought was reasonable). There is also a snack grill located in this area which makes it convenient to grab a hamburger or hot dog for a quick lunch without going back into the hotel.
Bottom line, you get a lot of bang for your buck at the Las Vegas Hilton. We were given a coupon book at check-in and used two coupons to save a total of $20 on wine both nights in their restuarants (and the wine list is very reasonable priced), and even $4.50 on the breakfast buffet for two of us. There were quite a few other nice money saving coupons in that booklet as well.
One more big plus, lots of real nickel slots (yes, I'm a big player, ha ha) which were fairly loose, and even the quarter slots gave me quite a few wins. I ended up breaking even after two heavy days and nights of gambling, so that left me in a happy mood!
I noticed that they recently changed ownership (in June), so I hope that if changes are made, they are only to update areas that need a little spiffing up (like the elevator banks).
My suggestions to the new owners. Staff elevator banks with Security Guards to at least check for key cards - there are no guards currently, so anyone can go up to guest room floors. Coffee makers in the room are something I always enjoy and there were none here. Eliminate the petty $3.00 per day charge to use the room safe, too.
I recommend the Las Vegas Hilton to anyone who is visiting Las Vegas for business or pleasure, who doesn't want to spend a fortune on a decent hotel room, who isn't concerned with pretention and the "status" of the so called luxury properties (which really are not, folks, no matter how hard they pretend to be - just remember, no matter where you stay you ARE in Las Vegas, so get over it), and who enjoys good service from nice people. Looking forward to my next visit to this property!
Check their website out directly for terrific rates and packages. I saw a great package for a room with two half hour spa massages included for $78 per night! Now that's a deal!
