We spent 3 nights at Fitzgerald's by booking a hotel/airfare combo with Allegiant. We had visited the casino on previous trips but this was our first stay at Fitzgerald's. We love staying in downtown Vegas. Everything is in close proximity and you don't have to walk a mile (literally) to get to another casino.
Although seemingly minor, our main complaint was that during our stay the elevator service was incredibly slow. A few times we waited 5-10 minutes. Had we not been on the 12th floor, we'd have walked it. It appears that the "elevator renovation" has been an ongoing problem for many months, according to other guests we talked to.
Our room was comfortable and clean. The bed is a bit hard, but a softer mattress is my preference. The bathroom was big enough and the shower was always hot with strong water pressure. The in-room coffee maker was nice. I'd wake up earlier than my husband, and have a cup before we went downstairs to the McDonald's to have an excellent cup of coffee. The air conditioner was noisy, and the compressor kicking on and off would wake me sometimes. Maid service was prompt and friendly. (Make sure you hang up the "Do Not Disturb" tag if you don't want early service.) The staff, from the desk to the casino employees, were mostly helpful and friendly; although I'd like to have seen a few more smiles. We rented a car and guest parking begins on the 6th floor and goes up. The garage is short, so it seems like you go 'round and 'round for a very long time to find a space.
We didn't go to the hotel restaurant "Don B's" because the prices were expensive and a decent buffet can be found downtown for much less. We did have lunch at Fitzgerald's Courtyard Buffet and at $5.99 it was an excellent value. They have a soup, salad and baked potato buffet lunch special that was delicious. The clam chowder was the finest we have tasted. The food was well presented and the waitress was attentive and friendly. Three desserts were included.
The casino seemed to keep busy. I play a few slots, but don't spend a lot of time on them. My husband played $3 Blackjack and said he really enjoyed the dealers. Vegas has reduced many of the minimums on the tables. Although we have heard the tourism business there is hurting we couldn't tell because Fremont street was, as usual, busy and fun.
Overall, I would stay at Fitzgerald's again but I would make sure the elevators are repaired. The lobby in front of the elevators was often crowded as people waited; and it wasn't fun being cramped in there with (maximum load 10) 12-15 other guests who were not happy. It keeps you from just "popping" up to your room whenever you want to.
Fitzgerald's, as an older downtown hotel, is a bargain. It's a bit shopworn, but it's clean and a good value. I would recommend you give it a try (when the elevators are fixed).
