We were in Vegas for my 40th birthday, and for the day itself we booked the Canyon Dream Tour with Maverick, after learning from the Trip Advisor forum that the South Rim was the place to go.
We were picked up promptly at 6.30am from our hotel (Caesars), and after one more pickup at the MGM it was a 20 minute drive to Maverick's base at the small airport at Henderson. Stephanie drove the bus, and she also drove the bus in the Grand Canyon National Park. She was fantastic - really friendly, chatty and helpful, and through the whole trip she worked like a trooper!
Boarded a twin-prop Beechcraft 1900, after pausing for the obligatory photo in front of the aircraft, and the pilots were chatty and funny. 18 passenger seats in total, so quite a community atmosphere quickly developed amoungst the group.
On the flight out, we flew over the West Rim, and it was good to be able to see both the West Rim and the South Rim on the same trip - also enabled us to see that the choice of a visit to the South Rim was the better one.
On approach to the airstrip at the GC National Park, we caught the first glimpse of the canyon itself to the north, and that tantalising glimpse on its own was amazing - an enormous gash in the earth.
From the airstrip, it was a quick drive in the bus that was waiting for us to Mavericks' base, where we split into groups to board the helicopters. Our pilot was friendly and informative. My wife and I were lucky to be chosen to sit in the front seats alongside the pilot, and the view was incredible. Those sitting behind probably did not get quite as good a view. We all had headsets and could chat to the pilot thoughout.
After the heli trip, it was on the bus again, driven by the delightful Stephanie, and a short drive to Mather Point for a view over the canyon, with an hour or so to wander round and soak up the incredible surroundings. Then back in the bus, and a drive to Bright Angel Lodge, where lunch was supplied and we sat and eat with the best dining view in the whole world! On the bus again back to the airstrip, and the aeroplane back to Henderson. Caught a glimpse of the Skywalk from 16,000 feet over the West Rim. After landing, a much slower bus ride back to the hotel, but that was only due to the traffic on the strip.
Overall, a very slick, professional, competent and confidence-inspiring operation, much due to Stephanie who worked really hard to make the whole thing as informative and interesting as possible. The price for this trip was only a fraction more that the going rate for heli trips to the West Rim from Vegas, and value for money was immense!
One tip for travellers - it might be warm in Vegas, but at an altitude of 7,000ft the National Park can be cold - it was still -2C when we arrived, with snow on the ground in places - take a jacket!
