We stayed with another couple at the Rio in Las Vegas. Since we had an early flight the next day, we decided to stay on-property and eat somewhere at the Rio. We were in the mood for Italian and decided to try Cafe Martarano. This was the best Italian food we have ever had! To help you understand how important that is, you have to understand that my husband and the other couple we were with are Italian, we live in Northern NJ where there are TONS of Italian restaurants, we eat in little Italy in NYC very often and my mother-in-law is a FABULOUS Italian cook.
The service was outstanding and the open kitchen was exciting to watch. The bill came to $318 (without tip) for the 4 of us but that included a $60 bottle of wine and $24 in bottled water (did not include dessert or coffee - we were too full). The owner does not want his flavors ruined by cocktails/soda, etc so they only serve wine and water. Your choice for water is sparkling water and what they call "flat" water (bottled water) so you are paying for water no matter what. This may seem controlling by the owner, but he is right! The flavors are so intense and delicious that you don't want them ruined.
The only other thing to be aware of is that a waitress will offer you something to drink when you are waiting for your table when you first come in. We spoke to her a little bit about wine selections and decided on 3 glasses of house merlot and a glass of reisling (a white wine). We expected the wine to be about $10/$15 a glass. We asked her if we could put it on our dinner tab but she told us that her area is separate from inside where dinner is served so she would prefer is we paid her. Ok - seems like no big deal, right? Well, we were SHOCKED when she handed us a bill for $86 for 4 glasses of wine! I am usually a generous tipper and leave 20% (even for so-so service) because I used to waitress and remember what it was like. But there was NO WAY we were tipping her $8 for walking 20 feet and getting 4 glasses of wine. We tipped her 4 bucks and wondered if we should leave. We thought maybe this place was going to be too expensive. THANK GOODNESS, we didn't leave and decided to just relax and enjoy because we would have missed out on a great culinary experience (besides we were celebrating our 15 year wedding anniversary and the other couple's 40th birthdays).
Do not be scared off by the wine prices per glass (just don't order it that way). It made much more sense once we sat down to dinner to order a $60 bottle of wine. It went much further than ordering wine by the glass.
Other than that, I will recommend this restaurant to every single person I know who goes to Las Vegas! The decor was very cool(music alternating with movie clips) and classy (I would dress pretty nicely)! It was worth every calorie, every bite and every dollar!
