Got married at the Little Chapel of the Flowers (see separate Trip Report) who arranged the Grand Canyon sunset picnic flight as part of our wedding package.
After our wedding (just the two of us) our limo took us to the Sundance location at the airport where we checked in, got weighed & were given a name badge. Feeling a bit silly dressed in our full wedding attire of tuxedo and big white wedding dress by now(!) we waited in the waiting area for about half an hour & watched a safety video.
Called out our numbers about 4pm and 6 of us (2 lovely Australian couples joined us) went off to our helicopter lead by our pilot. We put on our life jacket belts - very fetching with a wedding dress! - and posed for a photo. Put on the headphones which play a music soundtrack and audio commentary to drown out the helicopter noise.
The helicopters are smaller than I imagined but the take off and ride were really smooth & very exciting a first timer like me. We were sat at the front so probably got the best view. The commentary is really good and explains everything you see. Our pilot was also excellent and told us loads of interesting things about the landscape and history.
The ride takes about 45 minutes until you actually get to the rim of the canyon, after going over Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam. All are very impressive sights - after reading reviews we were aware that this is only the Western rim and so is not as 'grand' as in other parts, but it is still awesome.
The landing gave us a great opportunity for some fantastic wedding photographs. Thanks to the pilot, our Australian friends and all the other tourists who took loads of pictures of us! We will treasure them. The picnic luncheon was rather rushed and consisted of some champagne, sandwich, pasta salad, fruit and a cake. Not the best meal ever but as expected. For us it was our wedding dinner so we were happy :-)
The flight back is even better as the sun is setting and timed perfectly to fly over the strip in darkness to see it all lit up - what an amazing view. Got back about 6:30pm and a limo took us back to our hotel. This was in fact a favour as our wedding chapel had failed to send a car to pick us up, so that was really good of them.
Overall this made a great wedding day for us, but would highly recommend it to anyone - a must do when in Vegas!
