My husband & I took 6 of our friends to see LOVE following our wedding in Vegas over Memorial Day Weekend. Having previewed Cirque's DVD's prior to booking, we knew we were in for a treat. The Cirque du Soleil's founders objected to the treatment of animals in traditional Circuses, so all their performers are human. We didn't miss the animals! Every amazing Beatles song was illustrated with multi media imagery, thrilling acrobatics, delightful costumes, imaginative lighting & outragous props.
The show was a trip through history, revisiting different epochs of the Beatles career as it explored different characters search for love.
It started with a multi-media suggestion of the Battle of Britain, & the old guard, Victorian era folk & attitude, setting the stage for the refreshing change that the Beatles brought to popular music & culture with their up-beat whimsical approach to pop music.
There were airealists, climbing shining ribbons of light, in mirrored costumes during Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds. In line skaters did death defying leaps from a series of ramps, a trapese artist defied the rules of physics as costumed performers leaped from the top of a police call box to strategically placed nets & trampolenes for The Benefit for Mr Kite. Children danced piroettes as break dancers popping & locking, contorted their bodies to the amazement of the audience, A VW Beetle & a grand piano were featured props in several parts of the show. What they did with them you have to see!
Everyone in our party, from the 6 year old flower girl to our baby boomer friends, laughed like children, oo-ed & ah-ed in amazement, even cried during one scene.
In a word it was spectacular & worth the $150/ ticket price. I would love to see it again.
THe only drawbacks were the seats were so close together that my husband, who'd recently had knee surgury, had his knee lock up in the constricted position he was forced to sit in & had to get up & leave the show. The beginning war scenes were also scary for our 6 year old, but she soon recovered & really enjoyed what, to her, was this ancient music! You must also navigate the congested entrance to the Mirage & go through the casino to get to the Cirque's theatre. THe night we saw the show a bowling convention was in town & the Mirage was packed to the rafters with bowlers & their groupies, so give yourself an extra half hour to negotiate the insanity!
One of the added benefits of this show was rediscovering the incredible range & depth of feeling that the Beatles music conveys. We came home dusted off our LP's & have been singing along with them ever since! Enjoy this show & take some love along home.
