After reading many reviews for Vegas hotels on TripAdvisor, we ended up choosing The Signature at MGM Grand. Right away we realized that some units were rented out directly by the hotel, and some were owned like condos. However, it is still run exactly like a hotel (concierge, room service, front desk, daily cleaning, etc). We rented directly from a VRBO owner previously mentioned on this site- http://www.vrbo.com/117896. We saved quite a bit of money by doing this.
The hotel is simply gorgeous. It is gated, so it feels like a private resort far away from the craziness of the strip (but in reality if you walk through the gate and onto E. Harmon, it takes about 5 minutes to get to the strip & Planet Hollywood). The room was beautiful and immaculate. We had a view of the airport but could not hear anything. In fact, I didn't hear any noise the whole time I was there from other rooms. The room is exactly as it is pictures on the Signature website. Loved the bathroom with the shower and jetted tub! The bed was extremely comfortable, and we appreicated having the fridge to keep our water cool. Also, there was free internet and free local calls.
The Signature is connected to the MGM grand by a series of walkways (including moving sidewalks). Basically, you walk through the hallways, past the MGM grand pool complex, through all the MGM grand restaurants, through the MGM grand casino and finally out to the strip. If you want a hotel right in the middle of things, try the Bellagio. Or save money and just take a cab- that's what we did. Could go anywhere on the strip for $10, including tip.
Spent 1 afternoon at the MGM grand pool complex which is BEAUTIFUL. Loved the lazy river. Spend another afternoon at the pool next to our tower (each tower has its own pool). Also very enjoyable. There is a Starbucks in one tower and a small cafe in the other. We also rented a car directly from the hotel (more expensive, but also more convenient) and drove to Hoover Dam and Red Rock Canyon, which was great. I would recommend getting away from the strip at least once!
One issue I had- I called a 1-877 number (was actually trying to reach one of the hotels on the strip and couldn't find and local number) and stayed on the phone for about 30 seconds. Upon departure it was listed as a $10 charge! I must have had a look of shock on my face, because the front desk woman immediately said she would get it taken off and went to the back to get authorization to do so.
We avoided the $15/day resort fee by renting directly from the owner, and still got the water, paper and the room cleaned daily. We were informed before booking of a $25 fee upon checkout. The owner gave us her contact info and told us what to do if we were not satisfied with the cleaning. We were also reminded that since it is owned by someone (it's like their home, technically) anything we left in it would not be removed by housekeeping, such as food in the fridge. Nothing was there when we came in, and we did not leave anything except 2 dozen roses I had received as a present (I thought the next occupants would appreciate them!).
My advice: book directly from an owner and get an awesome 37th floor view! Plus save lots of money so you don't need to feel bad about taking a taxi sometimes.
