Just returned from a 3 night midweek visit. We enjoyed our stay and I'll definitely return. The problems I discuss were minor, but the cumulative effect of the service problems keep this property a step below Bellagio and Wynn resorts.
Also, I don't know what it is like on weekends, but the patrons were definitely older than one would find at the high end strip hotels. In fact, I saw more seniors than I've seen at any Vegas resort on or off strip. If you are planning a bachelor party, I'd say try something else...
We had a 2 bedroom mountain view room on the 6th floor. The interior design and decor of the rooms and hallways to the room is perfectly beautiful-- my favorite of all of the Vegas resorts. We loved the low key elegance, the colors, textures, sense of proportion, the use of water, light, sand, air--very feng shui, relaxing, tasteful, appealing to the senses. Enjoyed the good quality 42 inch plasma TV and the plush bedding. These amenities were better than the highly touted Wynn versions. Bathroom had a separate shower and large deep tub, separate water closet, and two sinks. My only complaints are that there isn't quite enough counter space for toiletries and the TV in our bathroom didn't work. I love floor to ceiling windows, but the hotel's advertising materials showing the mountain view are exaggerated. This is essentially a pool view. We loved the hallway to our room. There are live desert plants, fresh flowers, lovely light fixtures, attractive wall art. The rooms were set back from the main hallway into alcoves-so you can't hear the traffic in the hallways. The pool and the spa can be accessed from the room elevator area without having to walk through the casino or other common areas.
Many reviewers complain about the $20 resort fee. However, I didn't mind since the spa facilities are free for hotel guests (we didn't make it there this trip), you get a newspaper every morning, and free water and fruit in the hotel lobby, although coffee and tea in the lobby would be nice.
Now for the problems. In a word--service. At first we were impressed. We did arrive before the official check in time. Although only one person was waiting ahead of us at the reception desk, we were ushered into the VIP area to complete check in. Since we weren't VIPs, we were very impressed by this consideration. We were understanding that the room wasn't ready since we were early. However, our room was still was not ready 2 hours later after 3pm checkin time had passed. We tried again at 4:00 and it still wasn't ready. Housekeeping should have been notified of our check in and expedited the room cleaning. That was our first taste of the careless service and lack of professionalism that we would experience frequently throughout our stay.
My friend spent a few hours at the pool. It does look attractive and inviting. However she found the lounge chairs uncomfortable. They are molded--you cannot adjust them. You cannot lay on your stomach or side. They were difficult to get in and out of. There was little shade, and no misters. She also commented that it was very small--too small for a weekend crowd and definitely insufficient for when they open the rest of the hotel rooms.
With one exception we found the restaurants to be just average. Terra Rossa was exceptionally good. (Black Truffle Risotto to die for) I liked my meal at Cabo but it wasn't special and was a little overcooked. My campanion was not crazy about hers. Tides Oyster Bar was hit and mostly miss. The "Shrimp Louie" was actually shrimp cocktail on a bed of lettuce with an avocado. It tasted like bottled cocktail sauce on it. The crab dip was gluey. The steamed clams were excellent. The Cafe was just blah. We liked our sandwiches at Salt Lick BBQ. We couldn't believe they didn't have an asian restaurant. (We don't count Panda Express in the food court...) The prices at all of the restaurants we tried were reasonable as compared to their equivalents on the strip.
Overall restaurant and bar service was unprofessional. It's not that any of the servers were rude. Most were quite nice. They just didn't think of little things. For example not one restaurant server at any bar or restaurant we patronized thought to give us a pen with our bill so we could complete the room charge info. They just put a little computer printed tape down on the table for your bill and hustle away. No portfolio, no receipt for the customer. Restaurant manager needs to fix these things. Many of the hostesses and wait staff were obviously in their first such jobs. They need to be trained to deal with customers in a professional way if the hotel aspires to compete with the high end resorts.
Housekeeping was fine if you called them for service. Otherwise, I'm not sure when or if they would have shown. The one night we had turndown service she only turned down one of the two beds.
The casino was fine overall. The cocktail service was good. It is clean and comfortable with adjustable chairs and good lighting. It can get very very noisy though. Some of the penny slot machines are ridiculously loud. There is a big fanfare if someone wins more than $10. At one point, one of them went off over a $17 jackpot continually at eardrum breaking volume for a solid hour. When I complained after a half an hour of intolerable din, I was told that they were working on it. I can't believe that they don't have one technician at any given time in the place who can turn the sound of a slot machine off. I waited nearly a half hour for a handpay jackpot to be paid. I saw plenty of staff on the floor, but no one stopped, and they walked by me really fast to avoid any inquiries.
In sum, the reviews complaining about the service are accurate. This is fixable with some training and some common sense hotel policies. Otherwise, this resort is a great value if you love a nice room and nice facilities This property is not yet at the 4 to 5 star level, but it has that kind of potential.
