Booked a cheap rate through Hotwire, who frankly fraudulently deemed this hotel "near strip south." it's 7 miles from the MGM, which is practically at the end of the strip. Huge development, fairly high end and clean. Lots of the amenities : two arcades, bowling, movies attract families; so there were lots of families there. Retirees and locals, until Friday night a good enough mix. On Friday huge hordes of grubby teenagers/twentysomethings were everywhere. Nice kids I'm sure but more a reenactment in the oughties of rock and roll high school than the scrubbed clubbing youngsters you see on the strip. Asked a blackjack dealer where they all came from and she said "TGIF." I'm guessing nickel beer and really relaxed security. I fled. Not sure if the whold weekend was like that but it was plenty to keep me away. To be fair the room was huge and very clean. Lots of marble and a big flat screen tv. Oddly for the quality finish out the tub/shower weren't upgraded. With the cheap price on Hotwire and a rent a car it was fine for me but those partaking of alcohol would more than give back their savings in cabfare. Decent enough except for whatever happens on Friday.

Stayed here last year and this year for a convention. Great value and a nice place. Staff is helpful and polite. Large, nicely appointed rooms. Biggest complaint is lack of free Internet access ($12.99/day) and $15/day charge if you want to use the workout room, which is very nice. Would like to see these items included in the rate. Nice selection of restaurants in the hotel, including a very good buffet.

Fri-Sat 2 night stay for less than $150.00. Room has 2 Full-Size beds (they consider them queen). Large 42in LCD tv. Large bathroom. Everything was very clean, and organized in the room. Bath and Body Works shampoo, and conditioner along with mouth wash. Gambling was excellent (slots). The crowd is approx about 35-65yrs old. The coupon book gives you a $25 free slot play coupon. Movies are $7-$10, depending on times. Overall i would give this hotel/casino a 8/10. Mexican food was good at a GREAT price.

Great Place to stay in Vegas if you don't mind a drive to the Strip

We usually stay on the Strip, but we were sick of overpaying for old, dingy hotel rooms so we decided to chance it and stay at the South Point. We stayed around the time of the name change from South Coast to South Point and everything was brand new. Great, huge room - very updated and CLEAN! We rented a car and drove to our favorite places on the Strip and got to drive around all see some other casinos as well. We usually go to Vegas to gamble and have a good time and South Point definitely fit the bill!!

Great value for the price, just consider the tradeoff of its location.

The South Point was the official hotel for an event that I attended for 5 days in early June 2009. Can't beat the price! In fact, I got a $45 a night room rate through Travelocity for the week days portion of my stay, which was lower than the supposed advance discount rate offered through the event that I was attending. For such a low rate, you get a big room, with all the amenities. While the style and decoration may not strike you as luxurious, everything is of a good quality. The carpet, wall treatments, molding, bathroom floor and tile, fixtures, etc. The room had a king size bed, sofa & coffee table, small round table with 2 chairs, plus a separate desk with a chair. And even with all of that furniture, there was still lots of open floorspace in the room.

You've no doubt read about the bowling alley, movieplex, bingo hall and equestrian center. All are very modern and very popular. I ate a lot of meals off-site, so I don't feel qualified to comment on the South Point's restaurants.

The casino had all the typical machines and table games, but was small by Vegas standards. And it was very smokey. Obviously one area where they saved construction money was by not installing a mega-strength filtering system, like they have at some of the higher end Vegas hotels.

Is the hotel's location a pro or a con? I would say that you just have to be realistic about the tradeoff of off-Strip location vs. value. South Point is located far south of what is considered the southern tip of the Strip ... Mandalay Bay, Four Seasons, etc. You absolutely cannot walk to the Strip. Taxi is approximately $30 each way, more if you go to the northern area of the Strip. The famous Deuce bus that many visitors use to economically get up and down the Strip does not come anywhere near the South Point. At this point in time, the hotel does not offer a shuttle to the Strip.

So if you will travel to Vegas by car, you won't have an issue. Otherwise, I strongly suggest that you rent a car, for a least a few days. I did that and was pleasantly surprised that having a car in Vegas was not a hassle at all. All of the Strip casinos have free self-park garages, and even if you use valet parking, the only cost is a tip to the attendant. Traffic wasn't that bad either, even on Las Vegas Blvd. Now some of the lack of parking fees and traffic may have been because the visitor counts are way down during the current recession, so if you are reading this review months later, you may want to investigate to verify that these factors are still true.

All in all, I highly recommend the South Point, as long as you understand what you are getting for that attractively low room rate.
