Great Place to stay in Vegas if you don't mind a drive to the Strip

We usually stay on the Strip, but we were sick of overpaying for old, dingy hotel rooms so we decided to chance it and stay at the South Point. We stayed around the time of the name change from South Coast to South Point and everything was brand new. Great, huge room - very updated and CLEAN! We rented a car and drove to our favorite places on the Strip and got to drive around all see some other casinos as well. We usually go to Vegas to gamble and have a good time and South Point definitely fit the bill!!

Great value for the price, just consider the tradeoff of its location.

The South Point was the official hotel for an event that I attended for 5 days in early June 2009. Can't beat the price! In fact, I got a $45 a night room rate through Travelocity for the week days portion of my stay, which was lower than the supposed advance discount rate offered through the event that I was attending. For such a low rate, you get a big room, with all the amenities. While the style and decoration may not strike you as luxurious, everything is of a good quality. The carpet, wall treatments, molding, bathroom floor and tile, fixtures, etc. The room had a king size bed, sofa & coffee table, small round table with 2 chairs, plus a separate desk with a chair. And even with all of that furniture, there was still lots of open floorspace in the room.

You've no doubt read about the bowling alley, movieplex, bingo hall and equestrian center. All are very modern and very popular. I ate a lot of meals off-site, so I don't feel qualified to comment on the South Point's restaurants.

The casino had all the typical machines and table games, but was small by Vegas standards. And it was very smokey. Obviously one area where they saved construction money was by not installing a mega-strength filtering system, like they have at some of the higher end Vegas hotels.

Is the hotel's location a pro or a con? I would say that you just have to be realistic about the tradeoff of off-Strip location vs. value. South Point is located far south of what is considered the southern tip of the Strip ... Mandalay Bay, Four Seasons, etc. You absolutely cannot walk to the Strip. Taxi is approximately $30 each way, more if you go to the northern area of the Strip. The famous Deuce bus that many visitors use to economically get up and down the Strip does not come anywhere near the South Point. At this point in time, the hotel does not offer a shuttle to the Strip.

So if you will travel to Vegas by car, you won't have an issue. Otherwise, I strongly suggest that you rent a car, for a least a few days. I did that and was pleasantly surprised that having a car in Vegas was not a hassle at all. All of the Strip casinos have free self-park garages, and even if you use valet parking, the only cost is a tip to the attendant. Traffic wasn't that bad either, even on Las Vegas Blvd. Now some of the lack of parking fees and traffic may have been because the visitor counts are way down during the current recession, so if you are reading this review months later, you may want to investigate to verify that these factors are still true.

All in all, I highly recommend the South Point, as long as you understand what you are getting for that attractively low room rate.

Our stay was the weekend of June 6-11
Large spacious rooms with daily maid service. If you have kids like me, bring a PS2 with you to hook to the tv for dvd's and games, when they are not out. the hotel is clean and friendly and kids can be trusted to roam around with little supervision, some days I didn't see them for hours.
This is a great hotel that is family oriented. They have a large outside pool that is 4 feet deep but doesn't get to warm so during our stay it was weird that adults were in the kiddie pool and kiddies were in the spa/hot tub with no one really in the large pool. Also note that although it is family oriented, i noticed a woman laying on her stomach with her top off tanning, i saw this on at least two different days, no one complained.
The kids loved bowling, movies, and the arcade. Looking forward to returning again, when it is cooler.
If u need to go to the strip rent a car or share a taxi if your bold enough to ask someone to share. For food, I would suggest eating the breakfast buffet $6.95, then they have a 75 cent hot dog cart. If u go to the strip, there is fast food everywhere and make sure to get discount tickets by the big coke to save on shows.

My husband had some business to conduct in Vegas. We planned to stay for 2 days but later decided to stay for 4 . Pros: The price was right. The food is decent. The pool was nice, but it closes early. I was able to play bingo and the slots in the same hotel!!. The children went to the movies and had a chance to bowl, in the hotel. No resort fee. Plenty of parking. The children loved it.

Here's the cons:
It is off the strip. There's limited movies on cable. Long lines for check in. Housekeeping had to be called twice. Forgot to clean our room,. The movies are very expensive. The fitness center is additional cost. The business center has additional cost. Far from the strip. Limited places to eat in the hotel. Far away from fast food. The front desk seemed unprofessional and too busy to help. Quick to transfer you if you called to ask questions. We were told we would have queen beds but were given full beds.

Planned to stay here for just one night, but we decided to extend our trip because we were having such a great time. A distance from the strip but well worth the drive. South Point is not crowded (a negative if you are looking for a "nightlife" experience--which I wasn't), has sumputuous rooms, and has plenty to do. We went bowling, went to the movies, enjoyed the pool, played bingo, enjoyed some delicious meals, gambled, and played bingo all without leaving the hotel. The room was large and the bed was divine. I had two wonderful nights sleep and I don't usually sleep well in hotels. One night will not be enough---book two with the Internet special (which is a terrific deal!)
