After skipping lunch and driving from Phoenix to Las Vegas earlier on Saturday, May 15, we were famished at about 5:30pm. We were in the mood for a deli-type meal, so headed down to Carnegie Deli. We waited in line for about 15 minutes before seating.
Make sure you look around at what everyone else is eating to get an idea of the portion size. We ended up sharing a Reuben with corned beef. This sandwich is served "open face" and is about 4-5" tall. Oddly, the sandwich is so large, but the side of potato salad was so small, maybe a total of 6 small bites.
The sandwich did curb our hunger. Unfortunately, we did leave some food on the plate, and considering we were staying at the Mirage, we did not have the ability to take a "doggie bag" of left-overs for later enjoyment. We did not notice any smoke penetration from the casino into the restaurant, as previous reviewers documented. It is noisy, but then again, who goes to a deli restaurant in search of calm and quiet with classic music playing in the background? It's a restaurant inside a casino!
The service was spot-on. Plenty of ice tea refills. We did end up coming back to the deli around 10pm for a slice of cheesecake and coffee. It was still busy with hungry patrons, but a less agitated late crowd.
Does it beat the old typical coffee house found in some seedy casinos? Absolutely! Are you there for the ambience and napkin-armed service? No, but if you are, I suggest you read up on Las Vegas travel and restaurant reviews.
