I met up with some friends here earlier this year on a weekend evening. Fleur de Lys has hip decor, comfortable and funky seating, attractive and friendly staff, inventive cocktails and a great DJ. The DJ is for mellow background music, NOT dancing -- this place is way too small for dancing. We didn't try any of their food, but if you're looking for an interesting little watering hole, check this place out!

Pros: Low-key, not too crowded, great music
Cons: Expensive drinks, the good seating at the bar fills up quickly

What a perfect evening! My husband and I travelled to Las Vegas last weekend for a romantic get-away. Knowing Fleur-de-Lys in San Francisco, we had high expectations of this outpost at the Mandalay Bay.

Fleur-de-Lys did not disappoint! We made our reservations well in advance on OpenTable.com. When we arrived at the restaurant at 10:00 after a show, they had a beautiful private draped booth waiting for us. Although different in feel from the San Francisco venue, it was no less special.

From the minute we sat down, the service was attentive yet unobtrusive, personable but not gratuitous. Each and every person we made contact with treated us well without exception.

Now for the really important part; the food! We chose the 4 course prix-fix menu and found every bite to be fantastic! We managed to 'force' ourselves to make room for the chocolate souffle for dessert and ate every bite.

Quite honestly, I can't offer a single criticism of our dining experience. It was truly one of the best meals I can recall and I encourage anyone to dine there when in Vegas. If you can, request one of the semi-private curtained booths. It made a romantic evening even more so!

We went with very high expectation to Fleur de Lys after heaving read lots of high praise articles of Hubert Keller and his San Fransisco Restaurant. His resume is very impressive considering he has worked for Bocuse, Verge and Haeberlin which are all very famous 3 star cooks in France.

I will try to describe every course. We went for the 5 course menu which included appetizer, fish course, meat course, cheese and desert.

First a general remark:

Service was professional, but not courteous, people didn't try to make you feel comfortable, for my feeling it was a bit to business like, not what you expect if you go for a romantic and very good restaurant. But you cannot complain, except that our head waiter we saw him only twice, at the beginning when taking our order and then at the end bringing our cheque, not enough in my opinion.

Now to the meal:

The we had an amuse bouche which consisted of smoked salmon in a lovely fennel mousse - as it turned out it was the best course of the whole meal.

then we had both the foie gras torchon ( terrine) which in our opinion lacked flavour, wasn't really bad, but wasn't the quality you expect from a restaurant such as the Fleur de Lys.

Second for myself was a Lobster dish and for my wife a salmon dish, both were beautifully presented, but lacked quality. Nothing to write about it.

For our meat course we both choose Hubert Kellers signature Fleurburger, which is a Kobe Beef Burger topped with foie gras and black truffles, recommendation was medium rare and it was so rare inside, that it was more like a steak tartare that a warm burger - horrible experience and not worth the price.

The bad experience continued with cheese and dessert which were not good either.

All in all we spend 410 US$ with wine for the experience and in the end it went down.... since my wife was vomiting the whole meal out shortly after ending our dinner.

We left extremely dissapointed and cannot recommend the restaurant, nor will we give Hubert Keller a second chance

We had a fantastic meal here in August of 2006. The atmosphere was quietly elegant, and the service was impeccable. The waitress began by asking us about any food allergies, which surprised us until we encountered the food. Most of the items are so elaborately prepared and presented that you can’t necessarily be sure of all the ingredients, so we appreciated knowing that they were safe for us to eat.

One appetizer was a fantastic tuna tartare-- the best tuna dish I’ve ever had. The other was a playful trio of quail dishes, including quail breast, quail leg, and a fennel compote with quail foie gras, topped with a fried quail egg. My entrée was diver scallops with smoked mussels served over a smoky truffled chowder; my companion had the beef filet. Fabulous! Dessert was another trio, including peach mousse cake and champagne sorbet. We were also served an amuse-bouche and a complimentary post-dessert plate of tiny dessert tastes.

The portions were small, but extremely satisfying because of their visual and gastronomic interest. Including appetizers, entrees, desserts, a $16 glass of wine (their least expensive dry white wine) and tip, the bill was $228.95. Not cheap, but a wonderfully unique dining experience.

My wife and I had eaten at the San Francisco location on our 25th wedding anniversary and we couldn't think of a better place to eat on our 35th since we were in Vegas anyway. Maybe we were entranced by the romance and nostalgia of it all. Maybe they were really extra nice to the old farts. Don't know, don't care. They put us in a "cheaters booth" kind of thing surrounded by curtains. We went full bore with the 4 courses and wine pairings. Everything was a work of art. The wines were perfect. The service was impeccable and they even threw in a special dessert over and above the menu item and the little extras brought around the time l'addition appears. We are from the New Orleans area and we compared notes with the waiters about restaurants in our area and how they have fared after Katrina. Also, we are strong supporters of the John Folse culinary institute at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux. They brought us into the kitchen to meet the chef and we made small talk with him. What a thrill for an amatuer gourmet! It was a perfect meal, in a perfect atmosphere and it may just be the best we have ever had. Yes it is expensive. If you appreciate artistry you won't be disappointed. If you miss the days of the 99 cent Vegas shrimp cocktail, don't waste your time. You won't get this place. We loved it. If you got the bucks and the zest for perfection, don't pass up the chance to eat here.
