Oh dear what a pain this journey was! We started at the MGM Grand and travelleed to the stratosphere at the far end of the strip. This part of the journey went well but when we got off there were no signs and we ended up walking round a very dodgy district full of 'massage parlours'.

After visiting the stratosphere we walked back to The Wynn (fantastic hotel) and then after some cocktails tried to find the monorail back to the MGM. We wandered about for ages with very achey feet and even when we finally tracked down the elusive monorail station we coulnt find out ow to get to the platform for some time as several gates were locked shut,

For the $26 for 2 of us (all day passes) we wished we'd spent it on a cab instead

We bought our monorail passes before we got to Vegas and saved a few $s this way. I would suggest checking out prices on their website before you get there. Although you can purchase them easily enough once there, it was nice just to have the passes in advance.

We took the city bus one day and this was not an ideal situation for us. When we first got on downtown, the bus was not that full, but by the time we got midstrip, we were all packed in there like sardines. We did not really enjoy the bus ride at all.

The monorail is pretty quick and offers a quick non-crowded way to get around. I think that it is most useful from getting from one end of the strip to the other; however, if you are midstrip already, most places are just as easy to walk to. You have to walk to the back of the casinos to get to the monorail and that probably took as long as it did to get to the back monorail areas in some instances.

There are also free trams running down by MGM/Luxor/Excalibur, which we liked and used on more than one occasion.

Overall, I think it is a good deal if you are really going to be going a far distance, but otherwise I would suggest walking the strip and taking in the sites. The monorail tends to run in the back of the hotels and you don't get to see as much from this viewpoint.

It's a useful quick way to get around, although not cheap. A day pass (24 hours for 12 dollars) is a good deal if you make good use of it. Generally the waits for a train are 5-7 minutes. Unfortunately it can be quite a bit of a walk from the destination to the monorail, but the casinos have put in good signage and it has escalators and elevators. Should this get extended to the airport on one end, and Fremont Street on the other it would really be useful and cut down on the cab traffic.

It is nice that Vegas had the monorail to offer some convienence to the long walks and very hot days that they experience. It cost us $12 each for a day long pass. Made it easy to go from MGM to to the other end, but beware, as past Harrah's, it goes all the way out to the Convention Center. There is a shuttle to take you back to the Wynn (which was nice), but without it, you'd be way out, and the shuttle does not run all day.

The monorail should be a major consideration in choosing your hotel. The monorail goes through or near every major hotel on the strip. It saved our legs and feet more than once. Las Vegas is a LOT of walking, if you are not gamblers as we are not, and you're basically there to site see, the monorail is a must. We went to over 24 hotels in a week in Vegas. We saw it all. I would def book a hotel near the monorail and use it daily to get to any locations/sites. Some hotels also have a tram (there is one from Excaliber to Mandalay Bay), and some hotels off the strip offer free shuttles (Wynn, Rio). Feel free to call any hotel you wish to visit thats off the strip and ask if they offer a shuttle before shelling out the cab $. The monorail offers 24 hour passes for $12. Those are great.
