I'm just back from around my 20th meal at Delmonico since it opened. I came by the TripAdvisor reviews shocked to see several negative reviews. I felt a need to spread some love about what continues to be the best restaurant I have ever eaten at, despite my constant efforts to find it's equal throughout the world. Please use this reveiw to go to the restaurant informed, rather than with incorrect expectations about the offerings.
Delmonico is an expensive, upscale restaurant that serves meals, properly, in timed courses. The service is usually impeccable. The food is fantastic. Especially if you like cajun influenced cuisine. This meal is not fast, nor is it meant to be. If you want to be in and out of the restaurant in one hour, do go back to the Outback and enjoy the cheese fries (I love those friggin' cheese fries)! Otherwise, bring someone whose company you enjoy, have some wine and relax.
Delmonico is a Steakhouse. The steak is the thing here. Like most serious steakouses the steaks are prime and dry-aged in house. You won't find better meat. In case you are unaware, the place was created by Emeril Lagasse, who cut his bones at Commander's Palace in New Orleans. Cajun cuisine is very reliant on spices more so than marinades and sauces. All steaks are rubbed with Emeril's "Essence" which is a fairly standard cajun salt % spice cocktail. If you prefer your steak "natural" or "plain" go to Ruth's Chris or Morton's, they still do "natural" best. If you like flavor, Delmonico's Bone-in Ribeye is the best there is. They also do an outstanding Filet whose equal I have yet to meet.
They have have a very solid line up of soups and salads, you can rarely go wrong here. The warm spinach salad and the Lobster Bisque are staples. Much to my dissapointment they recently removed the Gumbo of the day from the Menu, we can only hope it comes back soon.
Always check the nightly specials. There are many gems here. They also have an extremely good wine list.
To sum up, this place is expensive, meals move at a slow comfortable place, the wait service is very good and the food has lots of cajun flavors. If you are a foodie, you will likely love the place. If you are a steak-lover who needs a steak to be "natural" and not flavored, try to loosen up and throw out your expectations. Or skip the boring "strip" and go for the Filet, it will knock your socks off and has much less surface area than the ribeye, thus more "natural" flavor.
Also, keep in mind that there are off nights. It happens everywhere. In 20+ visits I've definitely seen an occasional hiccup. This past visit my medium ribeye was really medium-well, this is the first time they have ever overcooked for me. I could happily have sent it back and expected perfection in replacement, but good luck gettin that bad boy out of my hands once I've smelled it. Again, in 20+ visits, I have the experience to say the hiccups are few and far between.
Be prepared, be open minded, savor the event, the company, the wine and the food. Relax and enjoy.
