and had a great time. I was a bit concerned about going to a hotel with such a "party" rep with two small kids, but it was never a problem.
We had booked the lowest tier room through an online discount site but were automatically upgraded to the Fantasy Tower. The gentleman at the desk said we'd be more comfortable with the kids in those rooms. The queen beds were very comfortable and the bathroom was huge. The room was also remarkably quiet - we heard no noise for the three nights we were there.
The kids went to Kids Quest, a childcare facility right off the casino floor, for an hour each day while mommy and daddy gambled. The staff was extremely nice and we felt very safe with our kids there. The kids had a ball playing video games and ordering up slushies at the kiddie bar.
We had a rental car, so the rest of our trip was spent out and about (there are lots of things to do with kids in vegas - hiking at Red Rocks, the children's museum, pinball hall of fame, chocolate factory). Whenever we came back to The Palms, it was only a short, easy walk to the room. The casino isn't horribly smoky during the day and shady characters were few and far between. At night the crowd does get younger and rowdier, but we were upstairs asleep by then.
The closest we came to party animals was early Sunday morning - as I was exiting the elevator with my kids to go to breakfast a group of 20somethings were just coming in from a hard night out. Everyone involved found it amusing.
A downside: The buffet was "meh" at best. We did a dinner and a breakfast there and were unimpressed. It's not worth it. Go to Luxor for breakfast or Red Rocks Resort (which has a great Kids Quest facility) or Spice Market at Planet Hollywood for dinner.
