We stayed here for 4 nights during October 2006.
I am going to break the review down to parts, The Stratosphere Hotel, facilities and entertainment, location and travel.
The Stratosphere Hotel
Considering that this hotel is one of the cheapest on the strip, we were not disappointed. We were in a Deluxe Tower room which was neat and clean and was serviced daily to a high standard. The decor in the hotel is a little bit dated, but not uncomfortable so. There was a queue to check in, but it was not that bad. The only problem was you had to take all your bags through the casino. You also had to try and avoid the people selling the time share which was always quite easy to do.
Facilities and entertainment
As this is one of the older casinos, it does not have all the facilities that the newer casinos have. Having said this, I feel that this adds to the whole Vegas experience!
The Stratosphere charges you for a resort fee! It does seem a bit of a rip off, but if you use the vouchers that you are given, it is worth it! We saw the Viva Las Vegas Variety show which was excellent.(for what it was) We also used our free passes to go up the Stratosphere Tower. This was worth the resort fee as you get spectacular views and cool pictures. There are also some of the tallest thrill rides in the world. The day we went up, only the big shot was working, but man, what a rush!!
The casino was enjoyable to gamble in, as there were tables to suit most pockets. It was also not that busy so you could normally get a seat at the tables.
The only really disappointing thing about the stratosphere is the eating facilities. As we had vouchers to Lucky's for a discounted meal, the service and the meal were not that good.
We did not use the pool, but did use the laundry facilities.
Location and travel
As we had a hire car, the location of the Stratosphere was not a problem for us as we were able to drive to the other casinos on the Strip and to Fremont Street. I therefore cannot comment on the buses/monorail/taxi's. I think for the amount you save by staying here, renting a car should not add too much to the costs and all the casinos have free parking. We never had any problems driving around or finding parking. I must admit that the area around the Stratosphere is not that great as it is stuck between the main strip and Freemont Street.
Overall we loved Vegas, the gambling, the casino's, the lights, fountains, and shops - everything in fact. Before we left for Vegas, we had purchased tickets to see Celine Dion - It was a brilliant show! (I was not a fan but my wife was, but we both enjoyed the show)
We will definitely be back in Vegas sometime!
