This is my second week-long stay here at the Westin Casuarina, both for a conference at work. The hotel has a nice atmosphere, especially being non-smoking (except for the casino), and it is nice to not have to walk through a huge casino floor to get to the rooms. It's just a short walk down Flamingo to the strip, and the location is quite convenient.
However, there are a few elements on the edges of the hotel that need refreshing - little things in the room. Some more major concerns are that my colleague's room (next door) had an issue where the door did not self-close - you had to pull it shut. She called to see if it could be fixed each day, and they'd said they'd come do that. It's not the biggest issue, except that housekeeping left the door open each day. That's a bit discomforting, and while there were no issues, she was understandably upset.
The other issue is that this is my second stay here (about a year since my first), and the "elevator situation" is still an issue. There are two concurrent elevator control systems; on each floor, some elevators are controlled by one button, some by another. The algorithm used by one controller is really bad, the newer one isn't so bad, but here's the issue - in order to get good service, you need to hit both buttons on each floor. This means that two elevators stop on each floor passengers request service. This halves the efficiency, and leads to even longer wait times.
The sign in the lobby from last year is still there, with no noticeable improvement.
"In our continuous efforts toward achieving perfection, our elevators will be undergoing technical upgrades during your visit. While this may cause some inconveniences as well as slightly longer wait times for your "vertical transportation" needs, we hope you can forgive us as it will ultimately ensure improved service for your future stays."
I was on the twelfth floor, and it was substantially faster to use the stairs than take the elevator. I suggest requesting a low floor to make your life easier. The hotel was unwilling to compensate (even add points) for the inconvenience.
All that griping aside, I would likely recommend this hotel to friends if they would like to avoid the huge casinos, and will probably stay here again (especially since work likes to book this hotel!)
