I'm not a gambler and usually my visits to Vegas are for the purpose of getting somewhere else--e.g. Zion, Bryce, or Death Valley National Parks. I can handle Vegas in small doses of up to two days. My recent stay at the Westin was a quick overnight coming from Death Valley National Park on my way to an early morning flight out of McCarran. No major conferences or expositions were in Vegas at the time resulting in hotel rates that were good at all establishments including the Westin ($169 total including taxes and "resort fee," but without internet access of $14.95 a day. I booked my room on the Starwood website).

The Westin is a good alternative if one is looking for something low key and calm. It's not a good choice for those looking for action in a self-contained entertainment and gaming paradise .

ADVANTAGES
1) Located off the Strip, the Westin is easily accessible by car, and getting in and out of the holel is quick because the Westin lacks the vast corridors and public spaces of the mega resorts.
2) Nicely designed and maintained rooms (albeit a little small) in the Westin "business cool" style. My room was on the 15th floor (Starwood Preferred Guest floor).
3) Extremely comfortable Heavenly Bed.
4) Helpful customer service at the front desk and concierge.
5) Many independant restaurants are located near the Westin, and the Town Square Las Vegas Mall with multiple dining options is very easy to reach.

DISADVANTAGES
1) Schizophrenic lobby--too much crammed into a relatively small space including a compact aming area that still produces enough noise to be intrusive.
2) The hotel restaurant is an open area located just off the lobby. I avoided it simply because the noise from the small casino disrupted whatever ambience the restaurant was trying to establish.

Because of my short stay, I didn't get a chance to try to fitness facility or pool.

I wouldn't recommend staying at the Westin Hotel in Vegas for several reasons...
1. Heated Pool...not really heated. Spa and Pool are seasonal and both were shut down for mechanical reasons...?
2. Casino...not much to look at compared to other 4 star hotels in the area...not terrible, but could be better.
3. No hot water...yes that's right we couldn't shower before our dinner and show one day because the hotel didn't have hot water.
4. Toilet and shower were both not working properly...shower wouldn't drain, and toilet was clogged.
5. Resort charge...? What for? $10 per day that you stay there even if you can't utilize the pool or have a hot shower come on!!
6. Homeless people congregate outside the hotel. Everyday we were bombarded by beggars and drunk beligerant people outside of our hotel. It became such an issue for us, that we would cut through another hotel/casino to get into our hotel. The manager told us that they DO call the police, but the sidewalk is public property. I disagreed that "nothing could be done" because at other close hotel properties these people do not attempt to loiter around the entrances etc.
7. Having stayed at other Westin hotels I would say this one is by far the worst one I have stayed at. We would definitely not stay there again when we return to Vegas.

“Good hotel and service”

We've had no problems at this hotel. Check-in was quick and smooth, room a bit on a small side but acceptable and clean. Heavenly beds may seem heavenly only to those who don't own a memory foam matress or a topper at home. Small pool with jacuzzi was never crowded and provided a fine relaxation at the end of each busy day. The restaurant is the only place we disliked. It's too expensive for what you get there, our steaks were burnt, their service was very slow and careless (they forgot part of our order). But there's a deli and a sandwich place right outside the hotel, lots of eating places are right across the street at Bally's, etc.
Location is great - quiet, but also within a few short minutes of easy walking to Bally's, Flamingo, Monorail and the Strip. It's a good choice, especially if you can get your low offer accepted through Priceline, like we did.

“It was great”

The Westin Casuarina Hotel & Spa

Got it through priceline. Was hesitant due to some of the reviews here.

The stay was great! Non-smoking throughout the hotel; much easier on your lung. It is close to the strip. Walkable (5 minutes) and feels safe. Convenient location.

Room was clean and has a huge table/desk to work on with your computer (you have to pay for internet). T.V. and channels are adequate. I love the chair/sofa in the room. The hotel/casino are small so you don't have to walk far from the parking lot. Easy access.

I stayed on 9th floor.

If you are starwood member, there is happy hour in late afternoon with free drinks and snacks. Nice addition.

The only bad things are two folds. One is that the "heavenly bed" is not as heavenly as per other Westin. But it was still very very nice for me. They also tried to charge me $11 per night for "service fees and tax even though I booked it through priceline. I just told the lady upon check out and she took the charges off right away.

My suggest is to call them ahead of time, make sure that they don't charge you on top of your priceline payment and take down their names just in case.

Otherwise, loved my stay there.

Stayed three nights.

Check in was a nightmare. Computers were down. Were told to wait ten minutes....then fifteen minutes more. We waited in the lobby area. Saw front desk staff just wondering around, chatting, laughing, having a good old time.

One hour later, saw people lining up at the front desk. I went up to see what was going on. People were checking in!! All the people that had casually just walked in were ahead of all the people that had waiting for over an hour! No staff member came to collect the group that had been waiting so long and bring us to the front of the line. It took over 20 minutes to deal with all the people.

Room 1618 was like a sauna (over 80 degrees). Safe and clock didn't work either. We had to shake the bedside lamp in order to turn it on.

We called to have the air conditioning fixed. Engineer was off sick so a plumber was sent up. He couldn't fix it so he called to request a room change for us. We waited ten minutes for a phone call. No one called us back. I called the operator and she said the person handling our concerns told her it was room 1718 not 1618 and she had gone home!!!

After a long time, bellman came up and took us to room 1463. This was no longer on the platinum level (which is where we should have been). Room felt warm but not hot. No keys were given to me. We were told to go down to the front desk and get them? I said no, someone can bring them to me. Finally got our keys and barely made our dinner reservation. We were now three hours into our ordeal.

Came back after dinner and room was still uncomfortably warm even though we had adjusted the a/c temp. Called front desk to get the engineer. We were told he was very busy....hmmm. Wonder why? Learned from him that there had been a water pipe leak that morning and a lot of room's air conditioning had been affected. So staff were well aware of the air conditioning problems. We believe that we were all put in the rooms in the hopes no one would complain. By 9:00 p.m., it was fixed. Start to finish - 7 hours of utter chaos.

This is supposed to be a non-smoking hotel, and we specifically wanted that. Yet we saw people smoking pretty much everywhere.

Although the location of this hotel is quite close to the strip, it is a dingy, icky area surrounded by what looks like construction dumping grounds, chain link fences with grafitti and a frequent hangout for drunks and bums.

The Suede restaurant is overpriced and not impressive. Breakfast buffet scrambled eggs were luke warm. Service was slow and unattentive. If you hate the smell of smoke when you dine, this is not the place to eat. It is adjacent and open to the casino.

Fitness room is small, cramped and offered the very basic in workout equipment. Certainly not state of the art.

Two out of three nights we got chocolates and the last night, I all of a sudden became queen and a pair of slippers per delicately placed beside my bed!

Positives? A couple...Beds are usually very comfortable and in this case, that held true. Complimentary bottles of water were replenished. Ample supplies of shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and lotion were provided, although I found the lotion to be watered down.

Not what we expected from a Westin and we know Westins! Wouldn't stay there again.
