We travelled to Las Vegas for our honeymoon on 16/3/08 with 4 nights in the Luxor, 5 in San Francisco and a final night back in Vegas at the Bellagio as a final night treat. American Spring Break was in full swing at this time, but didn't seem like it, as not a noticeable amount of young people in groups.
We arrived at the Luxor, as as per previopus reviews, the check in queue was very long, but moved quickly. To be fair, every hotel we went in to in Vegas had the same length of queue - it's just a busy place! We actually were checked in quicker at the Luxor than the Bellagio, although we had to carry our own bags at Luxor, to be expected tho.
It was my first time in Vegas, my wife's second - and we had chosen the Luxor because it was one of the more high profile names in the star rating group we were lookign at. We both found it a real disappointment. We stayed in the pyramid, and didn't see the tower rooms, which do sound alot nicer. The whole hotel and casino, rooms included, are very tired and run down, everything looks like it needs re-decorated and is very dated. Rooms were clean, but sheets and towles must have been washed 1000 times - just really diappointing.
The worst thing was every other hotel we went to looked as if it had just been built. A taxi driver told us the Luxor is due to be demolished, so they are not spending anything on it any longer. The Excalibur next door is the same price but just a lot newer. It really took the sparkle out of Vegas - felt more like Blackpool in parts of the hotel.
They also have a really annoying tannoy system which echoes all round the inside of the pyramind, starts about 6 am and goes on unitl at least 3am - and it can be heard from all the pyramid rooms quite clearly.
I pick any of the other hotels in the price bracket - Stratosphere is vert reasonable, cheaper than Luxor and nicer inside - Luxor you are really paying for the iconic image and the location (it's the last hotel at the end of the strip, but walkable in comfy shoes to anything else). Go for a cheaper hotel, get taxis everywhere (12 dollars for the length of the strip), as the Deuce bus which goes up and down the strip is cheap and regular, but takes at least an hour and a half to go the length of the strip, as it stops every 20 yards. We were barely in our hotel, it was just somewhere to lay our heads, but had it been nicer we may have stayed more. DO NOT EAT HERE, IT IS UNBELIEVABLY EXPENSIVE AND PORTIONS ARE POOR. Go over to MGM, just over the street, much better.
It's Vegas, you expect the tackiness, and that is what we loved, but you expect a level of luxury too. The hotel was the only bad thing about the whole trip, but as it's probably the first thing you'll see when you arrive, it starts you off on a bit of a downer. Treat yourself to the Bellagio or Wynn if money allows, if not, anywhere but Luxor will give you the total Vegas WOW holiday.
