It's been almost 8 years since the last time I was in Vegas, but before that I would go every year. With only one exception, I always stayed at the Luxor. I remember the hotel as being heavy on the Egyptian theme, King Tut's museum, etc.
There is still the theme going on throughout the hotel, but we learned that they are gradually doing away with all of that, in favor of attracting a younger, hipper crowd. They have closed off the museum and the IMAX attraction, and there is quite a bit of construction going on at the Atrium level (none of which disturbed our stay, we didn't hear a thing!).
The room was ok, nothing fancy but certainly not in disrepair. We had a view of the airport and a tiny bit of the strip (we were fine with it, we weren't going to be there much anyway). The only thing I was really unhappy with was the bed - the mattress was entirely too firm, and the pillows were WAY too soft.
On our last day there were finally walked through the entire hotel to see if we'd missed anything, and we were sad to say that no, we hadn't. There really wasn't anything interesting there unless you like clubs. No good shopping, no good eating.
For the rate we paid we had a good room, but on our next trip we are going to upgrade a little and stay a little closer to the mid-Strip. All of the other hotels (even the Excalibur, which I HATED when I stayed there one time years ago) had more going on than the Luxor did. OH! The one exception (for us) was Criss Angel - we will see his show at the Luxor when we are there next time.
