Came across this surfing the Web. A non-profit group is collecting old signs from Vegas. A few have been restored and are on display on Fremont Street. The collection includes hundreds and hundreds of old signs, dominated by all the pieces of the HUGE Stardust sign that used to sit across from Wynn. Unfortunately, many of the old Vegas signs were lost when properties were demolished or imploded before this group got together. They plan to display more of the signs, including the Stardust, in a park-like setting. They have relocated the lobby from the old La Concha motel that used to be on the Strip just south of the Riviera. "Googie" architecture. That was quite a feat of engineering since they had to slice it into eight pieces, move it, then reassemble it on the site of their proposed museum grounds. It will be the visitor center. They keep the location of the current exhibit, called the Boneyard, "secret". But if you look on Google Earth (or Google Maps Aerial) NORTH of Fremont Street along LV Boulevard, you can spot the eight pieces of the La Concha lobby AND make out the face of the huge, old Pirate that stood in front of Treasure Island before they rebranded as T.I. You MUST pre-register to get on one of the limited number of guided tours. Go the their website. Cost is $15. As an architect, I found this collection of memorabilia really fascinating!
