This review is actually for the Neon boneyard tour which is different to the Neon musueum (which isnt a museum, but a collection of restored neon signs dotted around the Fremont Street experience). They are both done by the same people, but the boneyard tour is where all of the old signs are kept prior to possible future restoration. The tour was about an hour and a half and was taken by the most fabulous chap. I cant remember his name but was a volunteer. He had quite long dark hair and was an editor of a student magazine at UNLV. He was so knowledgable and fun, he really made the tour. He explained about each of the signs and gave us a wealth of information abbout the history of Las Vegas at the same time. This tour is well worth the trip. The boneyard is located about 15 minutes walk North of the Fremont Street experience, and the offices where you check in for the tour are currently located in the Reed Whipple Cultural Center just opposite the boneyard. Another very interesting thing is they have the whole reception area/frontage from the recently condemed La Concha motel which used to be located on the Las Vegas Strip near to the Riviera, and have saved it from demolition and transported it in parts to the boneyard. They have finished re-assembling it and are going to be restoring it and using it as the new offices for the boneyard tour which will be completed in late 2009. Brilliant! We pre-booked the tour on the neon museum website, a couple of weeks before we went. It costs $15.00 per person and is well worth it. If you interested in the history of Vegas and the neon crazy world it used to be, then this is the tour for you!

Took a tour of the "boneyard" of neon signs through the Neon Museum. The Museum is saving and hoping to restore to former glory many of the original neon signs that beckoned folks back in the day. The Coin Castle King, Barbary Coast, Sassy Sallys, Aladins lamp, Silver Slipper and any number of Binions and Golden Nugget signs are there as well as the Stardust sign, the pirate from Treasure Island, the Tam O Shanter and what is left of Lucky the Leprechaun after the fire. Right now you have to sign up to tour and walk among the signs and take pictures while hearing the history. In the future the museum is hoping to have the boneyard open on a regular basis so access will be limited. The fifteen dollar cost is a donation for further the project and well worth it.

Nice way to spend a couple of hours and get away from the Strip. Good cultural history of Vegas and a lot of neat signs. In a few years this is going to be turned into an official museum, and you won't be able to get as close to the signs as you can now, so be sure to check this out if you're interested in a bit of vegas history--and want to be able to look inside the skull that once adorned Treasure Island.

What lovely people run the Neon Museum. Even if you're stupid enough to turn up on the day after you've booked for they still let you on the tour!! One of the highlights of my trip - a chance to see a little bit of Vegas history in a town that only seems to look forward not back. Very knowledgable guide who was happy to wait while people took all the pictures they wanted. It's about a ten minute walk past Fremont on the strip but you can tie it in with the Natural History Museum and the Old Mormon Fort which are next door to the boneyard.

First of all: the "Neon Museum" refers to the dozen or so already restored signs at the Fremont St Experience. The Neon Boneyard however has to be booked in advance via the neon museum's website. They do not allow ad-hoc viewings. All the relevant info is on the website. the boneyard is located about a 15 min walk north of the fremont st area, near Encanto Drive. Or you can catch bus 113.

Its currently $15 per person, lasts about an hour and is well worth it as it's very informative. Some of these signs are world icons, and that's not being melodramatic. The Golden Nugget and Stardust signs spring to mind. Just a shame they didnt get the "dunes", and it appears they wont be getting the New Frontier sign either.

The museum is currently building a purpose built reception area for the boneyard tours, out of an old hotel entrance, at the moment you currently walk to from a cultural centre based across the road.

Unfortunately, I cant post pics as you have to sign a disclaimer.

but this was the highlight of my trip to vegas, no doubt about it.
