If you are staying on the Strip then make a point to go up to the old Las Vegas...Freemont Street Experience! We came here in 2000 and didn't go up and we made a point to go this time. We were not disappointed! It is clean, well kept, great deals, so cool to see to see all the original casinos/hotels and most are enclosed with the overhead lighting canopy. We went on a beautiful night which even highlighted the evening. The lights and colors are beautiful! Great entertainment with a saxaphonist/singer, cover band, etc. There are nice street vendors, no solicitors trying to give you "girly cards" so it was a nice reprieve from that on the strip. We had a hard time finding a place to sit down and have a drink & small meal but other than that it was a great experience and FREE hence the name...FREEmont Experience...sorry to be corny :) Have fun!

Make sure you'll find time to visit the Fremont District when in Vegas as it's good fun. Have to admit it is a bit far from all major Strip resorts, but there is a public bus that runs from the Strip to Downtown every few minutes (can't remember the bus number now but you can always ask a driver or someone at the bus stop), the stops are quite frequent on Strip (e.g. next to M&Ms World and Paris & its Eiffel Tower). The ticket will cost you approx $2 one way per person and the drivers usually explain in advance where to get off the bus and where you can find the bus stop to come back to the Strip. Once you're there, I suggest shopping for your souvenirs and gifts from Vegas as most shops are bigger, cheaper and have a better choice than those around Strip.

Each time my husband & I have gone to Las Vegas, we have gone to Freemont Street. We always go at night & have fun.

We don't do much drinking, but having access to decently priced drinks is a plus.

This time we took our 2 young girls with us, ages 7 & 4. We went to Freemont Street to show the girls the light show & do a little shopping. The kids were mesmerized with the lights & music. There were people tossing beads off the balcony at The Golden Nugget & they yelled for our kids attention. They tossed our girls 2 strings of beads each. The girls thought that was "so cool".

They didn't think so much of the neon signs, but hey... they are still pretty small to like that kind of thing.

As for the safety of Freemont Street, it's like anyplace else. Be aware of your surroundings & aware of what is taking place. Also safeguard your cash, cards, etc. Just don't keep it all in one place on your person. I was more concerned with pickpockets on the strip than I was on Freemont Street.

We are going back to Las Vegas next weekend without our kids & are staying on Freemont Street.

Nice to get off of the strip once and a while and venture downtown, although round trip cab fare is around $40 - $50 with tips. Nice little casinos, the old neon lights, street performers and of course the canopy light show is a delight.
