We were staying on the strip and took the Deuce bus down to Freemont Street in the Downtown area ($2 each way - runs 24 hours). This section of Freemont Street is closed to traffic so you can wander freely between the downtown hotels. The surrounding areas are a bit seedy so I wouldn't stray off the covered section of Freemont. However, the main strip seems quite safe except for the occasional person asking for change.
The Freemont Street Experience is a canopy that covers a five block section of Freemont Street. The canopy is covered in lights which act as a very large screen and displays a several different music / light shows every evening. During the shows the lights from the hotels / restaurants are turned off to keep from distracting from the show.
I remember visiting Freemont Street almost ten years ago and wasn't all that impressed. I'd heard that they had upgraded the system a couple years ago so we decided to return for another visit. The shows this time were much better and I found then quite entertaining. The shows are colorful with good graphics and make use of the entire length of the screen. The sound system provides music and sound in time to the show. Since the speakers are positioned all along the screen they can make for some interesting effects.
There were also several other shows going on throughout the street (musicians / bands / acrobats / etc.). They even displayed a marker on the screen overhead to let you know when and where the entertainment was happening. There's enough here to enjoy for an evening and overall was worth the visit.
