This is a marvellous small hotel, which matched all our high expectations. It is a perfect first stop in Tuscany from Pisa airport (less than an hour's drive), and easier to find than some have implied - Ulignano is clearly signed to the right just a few km going south from Certaldo on the main road to Siena. Watch out for the (unmarked!) level crossing, then simply go up the village main street and after a sharp right-hand bend, the hotel is clearly visible on the right at the top of the hill. This road continues straight to San Gimignano (which we'd visited before) and provides the best approach view of the town - superb!

Parking at the hotel has been criticised but we found it no problem - there is a wide verge just down from the hotel building which easily accommodates 6/7 cars (if parked unselfishly!). The bus-stop sign can safely be ignored - never saw one, nor anyone waiting!!

We had downstairs room 3 - the Capezzuoli family live upstairs but we heard nothing, and slept well on both nights. The room and ensuite bathroom were spotlessly clean, although air conditioning was provided by a rather noisy fan (which we turned off at night without any problem). Breakfast was better than in many 4/5 star hotels, with home-made tomato bruschetti and excellent fresh fruit (including a memorable strawberry tartlet). When I suggested to Guido that he should consider expanding the business to include a restaurant (with himself and Mama as chefs!), he made the memorable comment - in perfect English - that one should "work in order to live, not live in order to work!". His relaxed helpfulness made it a joy to stay here, as so many have remarked. His final touch of kindness was to allow me to use his laptop in the family quarters so that I could e-mail ahead to our next hotel in Umbria.

We are already planning a return visit; wherever we go next in Italy we will try to base our holiday on spending some time back here - if this fantastic little place isn't fully booked up months ahead!!

PS. I agree wholeheartedly with the earlier recommendation for the village trattoria - outstanding food (especially the pizzas) at a most reasonable price, lovely view from terrace (with the local football pitch floodlit below!) and friendly staff. Both hotel and restaurant are a credit to Ulignano.

I actually booked this hotel after reading all the earlier reviews and I am so happy I did. It was our honeymoon and from reading how nice and helpful Guido was, I wanted to make sure our stay in Tuscany would be pleasant. The past reviews don't do the Hotel or Guido justice. He is the nicest, most helpful guy ever. He booked our Chianti wine tour, he gave us maps to the nearby local towns, recommended restaurants, gave us tips on how to find good, free parking and he made the most delicious breakfasts each morning. Those freshly baked cakes were divine. We booked way in advance and so we were able to get the corner room with the view of the beautiful Tuscan vineyards on the first floor. We had went on a Perillo Tour and stayed at many different hotels throughout Italy from Milan to Sorrento prior to venturing on our own through Tuscany and the accommodations at Hotel Asilo proved better than all those hotels. The hotels were nice but were not nearly as comfortable, peaceful or refreshing. Beds and pillows were soft and new, bathroom big with more of the American comforts we're used to...like a nice toilet seat and a shower curtain for one! The water and refreshments Guido made available for sale were cheaper than you'd find in the local supermarkets and proved to be quite convenient especially at the beginning and end of each day.

Also! Just in case you are still deciding where to stay in Tuscany, San Gimignano is a smaller, cleaner, less expensive version of Siena but still centrally located. Close to Chianti wine country, close to Siena and all the other little hill towns. Hotel Asilo is actually located in the small town of Ulignano, within a few minutes drive away from the actual hill town of San Gimignano. Last but not least, you MUST eat at the one and only restaurant in Ulignano. Within walking distance, ZAGHE E DOICCE serves up delicious homestyle Italian cooking that my new husband still misses. It was so reasonably priced with big portions we ate there twice for dinner.

“great value for money”

Hotel Vecchio Asilo

Jul 7, 2008

Great little hotel right in the mddle of Tuscany very convenient for seeing all the beautiful surrounding areas. Five minutes from San Gimignano and Cetaldo for great choice in restaurants. As you can read in other reviews, Guido really is the perfect host and cannot do enough to make your stay perfect. Rooms spotlessly clean and his breakfast cakes really are delicious. I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone.

“Delightful in every way!”

Hotel Vecchio Asilo

Jul 7, 2008

We had a 4 week holiday in Italy throughout June 2008 and this hotel had to be the highlight of it all.

Guido and Mama are the perfect hosts, warm, welcoming, funny and more attentive than we've experienced ever before.
Our bedroom was lovely and clean with fresh flowers and crisp clean linen - nothing was overlooked.
Guido couldn't have been friendlier and his home baked cakes at breakfast every morning were delicious.
A must if you want to stay in Tuscany!!

“Warmest reception, AMAZING breakfast!!!”

Hotel Vecchio Asilo

Jul 4, 2008

This is a quiet little inn in a quiet little town in the village of Ulignano, outside of San Gimignano. We only stayed there 1 night out of 14, but it was so memorable. The rooms, the hotel, the grounds are lovely and Guido is an absolutely wonderful host. I think he gets all of the credit because his English is so perfect, but I know that his mother and brother are there in the background contributing to a fantastic holiday experience. You will be amazed at the breakfast they bring out! We thank you!

You can reach Guido by emailing info@vecchioasilo.it, and check out his website at www.vecchioasilo.it
