The Dam is close, maybe 35 miles or so.

You can rent a car at your hotel facility depending on where you’re staying, but as far as your Insurance needs and so forth I know nothing about because you’re not from the USA.

Renting a convertible in the summer is nuts, you will roast if the top is down..

After the Dam go over to the Vally of fire...

Most people who live in the UK or other countries recommend that one should rent a car from an agency in that country because of the insurance issues. Also- when looking at a rate- be sure it includes all the taxes and fees- not just the base rate. It can add more than 1/3 of the cost of a car.

From Hoover Dam you can get to Lake Mead which has a nice, relaxing and educational paddleboat cruise and Valley of Fire. VOF is simply stunning. The sandstone formations are out of this world. It is certainly worth the trip there.

There's no "messing around" when renting if you're a UK resident. As vp03 said the best deals are to be had if you book and pay in advance before your trip.

Perhaps post again with "UK" in the title so that the correct people will read it and offer advice on which companies are best.
