First trip to Vegas for a couple of pushing 40'ers

Going to Las Vegas for the first time in September 09. First time to America in fact. Celebrating patner's 40th birthday and leaving children at home with the grandparents. Can't wait

Would like some advice on a few things to do as I am reading reviews on tripadvisor and getting really mixed messages. Have already booked Grand Canyon trip so would like some help on shows, reataurants things to see etc.

Thanks alot

Check out one of the Cirque de Soliel shows. There are five shows on the Strip.

although visiting vegas may not be experiancing the usa you sure did pick one of the funnest.

grand canyon is a wonderfull sight to see.

as for the rest of vegas just keep browsing the post here, take everything complaint wise with a grain of salt since if you read between the lines most negative reviews coencide with losing trips.

try getting out and seeing as much as you can, and most of all just have fun.

Destination Expert   What's this?
for Las Vegas

How many days are you here? Where are you staying?

That would help us decide how much 'stuff' to fill your time with :)

I would recommend spending some time downtown and see the Fremont St Experience.

Anyone can give you a list of stuff to do, but unless you give more details like where you're staying and for how long, it's a craps shoot on what to do. There is so much stuff to do and see this informaion is important to help regulate your time.

Hi

Remembering our first trip to Vegas, and as a fellow Brit, I hope my advice will help.

We walked The Strip - all of it. Wear comfy shoes 'cos your feet are going to hurt like mad by the end of the day. Call into any of the casinos that take your fancy. After a while, they all start to look and sound the same, but the ones I think worth spending time in are Bellagio and Caesars.

Fremont Street is fun, but be warned. Parking can be a nightmare, and if you find yourselves parking even a few streets away from the hub, you could find yourselves in "dodgy" areas with beggars and undesirables abound.

We ate at various casino buffets. As is so often the case, you get what you pay for.

The Hoover Dam is worth a trip.

Hope this helps.

You Gotta go to the Double down saloon

http://www.doubledownsaloon.com

Also Hardrock,Planet Hollywood..aka PH

to celebrate.

Eat a double burger @ In & Out Burger, it's on W Tropicana.

Eat @ Ellis Island, it's behind Bally's ( at least once)

Make sure you check out Big Elvis @ Bill's Gambling Hall.

just a few ideals, keep researching on this forum,

there are some very Las Vegas savvy folks on here.

Enjoy

Welcome to America.

Drink. Gamble. Drink. Eat. Gamble. Drink. See some shows if you have time. If you are a Beatle's fan, see the LOVE show at Mirage. If not, pick one of the other Cirque shows such as Ka or O. Wayne Brady at the Venetian puts on a funny show. I've heard that Terry Fator is really good, but haven't seen his show yet.

Eat a meal at either the Eiffel Tower, Voodoo Steakhouse, or Alize at the Palms.

See the fountains and conservatory at Bellagio.

Go downtown one night and play craps.

Have a vodka at the ice bar in Red Square at Mandalay Bay.

Drink. Gamble. Repeat.

If you have never seen a Cirque show before- Mystere or Love would be great. I think Mystere has the most WOW moments and Love is fantastic in every way. I have also seen O-it was fine but I didn't think it was as good as the other two. I didn't like Ka at all. The stage was great but that was it for me. Jersey Boys is also an excellent show.

To me the must sees would be: the Bellagio fountains and conservatory(at night); Eiffel Tower; Venetain canals and ceilings; Mirage volcano and the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace (both an attraction and a mall). Big Elvis puts on a great free show 3 times a day M-F at Bill's.

Just popping in and out of the various casinos will take good bit of your time since almost every one of them is different.

It is almost impossible to recommend a restaurant without knowing the kinds of food you like, the kind of restaurant you are looking for (casual, romantic, etc.) but most of all- your budget. There are hundreds and hundreds of restaurants in Vegas from inexpensive to very expensive. You should go to one- and only one- buffet (Wynn is good) because it is the "Vegas" thing to do.

Harrah's Carnaval Court is always fun at night. If you don't like what you hear- just take a few steps into the casino and you will be at the Dueling Pianos- also a fun spot.

It would help if you told us how long you will be staying. If it is only a very shosrt trip I would not recommend leaving the strip. If it is longer- you could spend one evening/night downtown.
