Las Vegas Forum: 4 Queens wasn't for me

 4 Queens wasn't for me

I know alot of you like the 4Q's. I read alot of good reviews. I think I expected too much. I like places like the SouthPoint, MGM, Stratosphere. Yes, the Strat. These are not luxury places but modern, I guess.

I booked 4Q on Expedia for Jan. 1 thru the 4th at $26 a night. When I arrived and stepped off the elevator on the 18th floor I knew I had made a mistake. It reminded me of a senior home or nursing home already, and this is the hallway. It was just so small and the ceilings were inches above my head. I opened my room door and was hit in the face with a 82 degree room. The room was not very clean, carpets not vaccumed. And so small. The bathroom faucet and toilet looked like they were from the 70's. The air wasn't on. I couldn't get it to work. I turned the thermostat down and nothing happens, I turn it up and the heat comes on. I called down and they said they would send a engineer. OK, an hour of waiting and I go down to the casino. Maybe he or she will come while I'm out. I returned to the same heat. I opened the window and got on the phone with Expedia.

I told them I called and no engineer has come. Yes, I called once. No, I didn't feel I should have to keep calling the front desk. I told the friendly guy on the phone I wanted to stay elsewhere. He said to hold and he would get the hotel on the phone. He came back on to tell me the desk had no notes of my call down. So, another reason I now dont like the 4Q's. I tell him I want to cancel and go elsewhere. No refund on this first night but the next 2 are cancellable. Great! I book the SouthPoint for the 2nd and 3rd.

Am I too young for the 4Q's? It just didn't seem like Vegas to me. When I go to Vegas I like a nice room with new, clean furnishings. And some A/C also. I slept that night with the window open and even on the 18th floor it was sooo noisy. All cabs should have their horns disconnected. Seriously, I heard cab horns several times every minute.

So, whats up with all the great reviews? I am not wealthy. I dont live in a mansion, in fact a farm house in rural Iowa. Maybe I just happened to get the wrong room on the wrong day.?

Ditto what racegrrl said, good for you, am impressed with Expedia for doing something about it, did they book the room at SouthPoint for you?

No matter what the rate was at 4Q's, one would expect a clean room with AC/Heat in working order, I would have done the same thing.

Hope the rest of your trip was better.

I know many people do like to book through 3rd parties like You did Jason with Expedia, however, my one and only time I did (a number of yrs ago) swore never again! This was not Vegas, but an Orlando Disney, Sea World and NASA Kennedy Space Center vacation, and I was very disappointed with what we received room wise, had to be the worst room location on the property! I kid You not!

The Hotel was nice enough, however where they placed us was awful. Our room was on the ground floor with a stairwell to the 2nd floor as our view to the Pool (of course totally blocked view and just a few feet from our door). Not only was the view or non-view bad, but the noise level was terrible.

In the mornings before we left out for the day's activities and upon returning early evening, there must have been 200 kids running up and down that stairwell, which sounded like a herd of horses! The Hotel would NOT change our room, and said it was booked via Expedia, sorry, that's the room You get! I almost wonder if the Hotel puts the 3rd party reservations in their crappiest of rooms?

Live and Learn, and I did!!! I will never take the chance again, Expedia is great to check out hotel pics and gather information, but use them as only a tool, is my best advice.

Anywhere we travel now, we book our own reservations directly with the Hotel Property. I believe You have alot more leverage and good service with the Hotel, if you book directly with them.

Perhaps, those Hotels are paying out commission to Expedia? Therefore, guess who gets the crappiest of the rooms? I don't know the rhyme or reason behind it, all I know is that these hotel folks almost acted pi$$ed-off that we used Expedia instead of booking direct, and consequently we didn't have a leg to stand on getting a better room.

Our days were maxxed out activity wise with all there is to do and see in Orlando and surrounding areas, and our room was fully paid for via Expedia. We didn't have the time to just get on the phone and go searching for another hotel. Sometimes, You just gotta bite the bullet when on vacation, I guess. Anyway, that's my 2 cents on booking through 3rd parties.

Jason, sorry your expectations were so high.

Because I am one of the people who love Four Queens and I know that several of you reading this are thinking about staying at 4Q, I will try to answer some questions.

I have only been in rooms in the South Tower so I can only speak for 4 rooms there. We were there over week long stays in June, August, and Dec over 2 years.

I was never overly impressed with the rooms. Mine have always been smaller with older decor than the other casino hotels I have been elsewhere, but they were all clean. As far as air goes, Dec was a cold month so we didn't use A/C in Dec, but it worked great in June and Aug.

They are typical Holiday Inn Rooms. Nothing to write home about. I think everyone factors in the price when they review. The maid on the ninth floor is Gladys and she does her job well. You probably had a room done by a lazy worker. It happens. I would have asked for another room when you had more than 1 problem.

Anyone worried about staying at 4Q for the first time please PM me and I will set your mind at ease.

"How are these folks so different from me"...well, for one thing, when we book a 26 dollar a night room, we get what we expect.(rooms in Seattle are around 150 up per night)I have booked USAir packages with 4 Queens numerous times, and never have had a problem..the room is always clean and housekeeping has been great..the elevator is right next to the entrance to the canopy area...slots have always been good to me...maybe you did get the wrong room on the wrong day...I will be there again in February and expect the same good service.

No way did I let this sour my trip. I had a great time. I learned where I do not like.

Sunny...I like to use Expedia so I can have some of my trip paid for weeks or months ahead of time. Maybe it seems cheaper to me this way? LOL I like to pay before I go. Sorry you had a bad experience with expedia. I have used them many times and never had the feeling of being punished for using them. I guess this just shows we are all not going to have the same experience be it hotels, airlines, or third party reservation sites.

Expedia treated me right. The 4Q's IMO did not. Others dislike Expedia and love the 4Q's. Go figure.

I was also dissapointed in 4Q last year after having stayed at South Point, I vowed never to return again. I guess I expected too much from downtown after seeing the Strip. They're entirely different worlds. The food is cheap though, and I might just give DT a second chance and try GN next time.

for Las Vegas

I too am a huge fan of the 4 Queens and have never had a bad experience with them and I have stayed there approx. 5 times and have experience both towers. One of the big differences here is the fact that the Queens was built in 1966 downtown and South Point was built in 2005 on the south strip in a newly developed area in modern architecture. I think it was just an off day in an off room. I have stayed at the Golden Nugget which is by far the nicest hotel downtown but I didn't enjoy it like I do the other properties downtown like the Fremont, El Cortez and 4 Queens.

We all have different ideas what the Vegas experience should be like.

jason, I have a couple of comments. First of all, the people who enjoy staying at 4 Queens are not looking for a modern, renovated room. You know you wouldn't get a room at MGM for $26, so you have to adjust your expectations accordingly.

Of course, you *do* have a right to expect a room that is a livable temperature. It doesn't sound like you actually asked to be moved to a different room, which would have solved your problem. Rather, it sounds like you were eager to use the faulty heating as an excuse to switch hotels since the decor and ambience at 4 Queens was not to your liking. I'm glad Expedia took good care of you, they get a bad rap on this site but I have always had good service from them.

Any hotel can have a room that is insufficiently clean or has a faulty toilet or heater on any given day. Obviously, if everyone who stayed at 4 Queens got that room, it wouldn't be so popular. But I'm sure you can understand that your experience may not be typical.

Thanks for posting this comment "I have booked USAir packages with 4 Queens numerous times, and never have had a problem.."

I have just booked a week long trip thru US Air staying at 4 queens beginning Feb 4. I have never booked any vacation package thru an airlines & I have never flown with US Air.
