My husband and I traveled to Vegas from Aug 24-28. We flew Allegiant Air out of Appleton, WI direct to Las Vegas. The flight was no-frills, but easy, on-time and cheap. We rented a car from Thrifty ($73 for the entire trip!!) so we could get around easily. Plus, most hotels/casinos have free valet parking so a few tips go a long way for that kind of convenience.

We arrived at the MGM Grand on a Sunday around 6pm. There were very short lines for check-in. When we got to the desk, we asked about upgrades. The guy said there was one available the next day for a charge, but we declined. He confirmed we were booked for a Grand Tower room with a king bed & non-smoking. After several minutes, he told us our room was not available. We had dinner with friends planned for 8pm at the Bellagio, so we told him we were in a bit of a rush and needed a room. He wanted to stick us in a West Wing room, but we declined. Finally, he found a Grand Tower room with 2 queen beds for us and instructed us to return in the morning for our king room.

Our first room was on the 17th floor with number 118. This was about halfway down the long corridor. We had a view out the back of the hotel toward the pool. Not bad, but we really wanted our king bed. So we went back the next morning and they got us a king non-smoking room. They gave us room 119 on the 21st floor which had a view of NYNY and Monte Carlo. There was no offer of food or any other compensation for our trouble. We proceeded to eat at the Studio Café since we had read about the good prices and decent food. We were very disappointed at the prices ($12-15 dollars per plate for breakfast) and I found a hair in my food. The food was replaced, but we had to pay full price. Not very good customer service, in my opinion.

We also ate at the Farmer’s Market (half dozen fast food places to chose from) a time or two, Fiamma (Italian, which was decent but not spectacular) and Diego (Mexican, which was our favorite restaurant on this trip). Besides meals at MGM, we ate at Fix in the Bellagio, Mon Ami Gabi in Paris, Hooters and a hole-in-the-wall Mexican place on Charleston Blvd on our way to Red Rock Canyon. All were tasty and enjoyable.

The rest of our stay in the hotel was good, but nothing spectacular. Housekeeping always left us with plenty of towels and toiletries. There were several housekeepers on our floor in our wing all day every day. Had we needed something, it would have been easy to ask one of them. The common areas are all kept very clean and tidy. We never had to wait long for an elevator. The $13.99 a day for internet gets a big thumbs-down from us. We never bought it, but would have liked internet access if it were cheaper/free.

The pool is great with lots of different options of where to sit/lay. We didn’t rent tubes, but we did do a lap in the lazy river. We constantly saw cocktail waitresses at the pool and you can hear music nearly everywhere at the various pools. I wish we would have spent more than a few hours there.

The casino was nice with lots of tables and slots. We didn’t play poker or the sports book, but both were large and nice as well. Drinks at the bars are expensive, but they’re expensive everywhere on the strip. Of course, if you’re gambling, drinks are free.

We saw KA on our last night. We liked it a lot. It was our first CDS show and we were nervous after reading some reviews. The show is a mixture of acrobatics, drama, stunts and stage movement. We plan to see more CDS shows on our next trip to Vegas.

Check out was a breeze. Our beverage and restaurant charges did not show up on our bill so we’re puzzled as to what happened. We know we were not comped them entirely since we checked with the Player’s Club who only comped us $50. Beware, you need to bet $25 a hand to get any comps at the tables. Slots get you comps at all levels, just different amounts based on your bets.

All in all, we may stay at the MGM again. We got a decent price (averaged less than $100 per night). We like large properties with all the amenities. While some service issues exist, the pool and good strip location are the things that may draw us back to MGM again.

"The rest of our stay in the hotel was good, but nothing spectacular" That pretty much sums up my opinion of MGM too. It's not Wynn or Bellagio, but then again it's not Harrahs or NYNY either. You get fair value for your money.

I'm afraid I also agree with you about Studio Cafe. I happen to think it's one of the most over-priced restaurants on the Strip. But in all fairness, I think most LV coffee shops (cafes) are not good values when compared to other dining choices. Still I think there are better hotel coffee shops in the same price range.

Sounds like a fine trip, thanks for the report.

I stayed at the MGM last September and I too found the Studio Cafe too expensive for breakfast and $6 a beer at the bar way over priced. These are the reasons I'm a fan of downtown and some of the off strip properties.

Your experience at the Studio Cafe is the exact reason I choose to use a buffet instead, whether it's at MGM or elsewhere. It's a much better value and offers a much better variety. So I don't get someone to bring my food to me. No biggie! The MGM buffet even offers smoked salmon, one of my 3 or 4 times a year treats due to its market cost. I eat that after my custom-made omlet to counteract the cholesterol. Yeah, that's it!

Thanks for your report. Maybe something was taken off your bill afterall for the bedding mix-up. Hard to believe a 5,000 room hotel didn't have a King N.S. on a Sunday. Maybe some rooms are out of service due to renovations.

Glad I'm not the only one who didn't care for Studio Cafe!!

As for them not having a room for us on Sunday night, I asked the guy at check-in how they didn't have a king non-smoking room for us. He said that they had over 2000 check-ins that day which they couldn't keep up with. That didn't sound right to me. So I asked if they knew I was coming (I had a reservation, so I knew that they knew). He said yes they knew I was checking in and what room I had reserved but they were "backed up." I laughed and asked what a reservation was for!

Can't believe that happened at 6pm on a Sunday. Oh well.

Hard to believe they did not have a king NS rooom. You don't think the check in person was still attempting to get you to pay for an upgrade? I believe the reason the Studio Cafe is so expensive is that it is comped for lots of us. If we stay at MGM, we can always eat there and get whatever we want. You may have been comped meals due to your play. Did you have a player's card? We usually get invited for 3 comp nights and 4 restaurants to choose from (Cafe,Buffet (hate them),Wichcraft and the Asian restaurant next to Studio Cafe.

Not to be mean but when you reserve a room type at any hotel it is not confirmed that you get that type. All of the Kings may have been taken or could have been dirty and not ready when you needed one.

I also agree with the people who say the buffet is the way to go for breakfast. After you pay for just drinks, most times in cafes, you could have almost had the buffet and the MGM buffet has the best fresh sliced bacon!!!

We didn't get much in comps. We had the Player's card from previous visits to other casinos in the MGM family. My husband played blackjack for three days straight, but didn't bet the $25 per hand that earns points. I played a mixture of blackjack and slots and earned most of our comps via slots.

Forgot to mention: The air conditioning in both rooms was terrible. Apparently they've got something in place that doesn't allow the room temperature to go below 75. This was identical in both rooms we had and others there were commenting on the same thing. (You can 'set' the AC on 60 but it does no good).

Hi,

My husband and I were there during this same time frame.......there was a 100k convention in town.....it was the Magic clothing conv. ....that's why the hotel was so booked :) (Usually we do not go when there are huge conv. in town but we took my Mother-in-law as a thank-you and she had friends in town during the Aug 24-26th time and wanted to meet up with them). As soon as we got our luggage and headed out to the rental buses my husband commented that it was busier than we had ever seen it before........and it was......a man on the car rental bus let us know about it.

Anyhow.....I hope you enjoyed your trip....Lea :)

I did enjoy my trip and I'm glad I went.

We didn't know about the MAGIC convention ahead of time, but definitely saw lots of those folks walking around.

It's not the busiest I've ever seen Vegas... I've been there on both Labor Day and Memorial Day before.

It's fun for me whether it's busy or not.
