My husband and I are visiting Las Vegas this spring.

We have visited Las Vegas about five times, we are staying mid srip this time, we have never rented a car before. We are hearing about nice restaurants we cound visit off strip, as well as other attractions in Las Vegas, and Red Rock Canyon,

Is it worth our while to rent a car to go off strip?

Sure, why not? Even if you just rent a car for a day or two rather than your entire stay.

After five times in Vegas it's about time you perhaps spread your wings and checked out places away from the Strip. I'd certainly rent a car for part if not all of your trip.

Car rentals can be pretty cheap in Vegas as long as you have personal auto insurance that will cover your rental and you don't have to buy the expensive insurance from the rental company.

Since you have been to Vegas you know how the traffic is. If you are comfortable driving in it get a car. You can see many things you probably have not seen if you have never had a car in Vegas.

Depending how long you are staying you can cover a good chunk of the cost of your rental with what you would pay for taxi fare to and from the airport

I wouldn't recommend it for a first timer but definately, yes. I go through Payless for the cheapest prices with no problems. Last trip rented from Friday night until Tuesday a.m. for $61.

Advantage and Payless show the lowest rates, but try to use dollar.com, or another alternative not too much higher. Screen rates on expedia.com. You can reserve on expedia, no fees to cancel a car res.

Adv. and Payless have the rep of boosting cost in various ways;

demanding a higher rate if your plane is late, saying the res is no good any more; slipping in insurance extras that you initial, thinking you are declining them..demanding repair costs for existing damage...etc. Add in old, dirty, and poorly (sometimes dangerously) maintained cars, and you have a must to avoid.

One thing I love about having a car is that you can get from property to property w/o having to walk all the way there and back. Which as we all know is further then it looks. I drive to the valet, hand them a buck or two go on in, when I'm finished go right out and head to the next place. Same with reservations and shows, I like to spend more time enjoying Vegas then worring about making it to the place on time, with a car you control your schedule much more.

Rent the car - you won't go back.

Cheers,

CS

Also, grab a Vegas street map and learn some of the major back roads. Driving on the strip is slow. I usually take Eastern or Maryland (they run parallel to the strip) when needing to get around.

Do rent a car.It is very cheap and it also allows for day trips. we have gone to Zion and Bryce, VOF, and also Death Valley. It can be alot of fun seeing the sights. If you have one a GPS can come in handy. We pack ours as it helps guide us to some of the out of the way places that we probably could not of found ..Mark
